Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to research, select and experiment with a broad range of printmaking techniques to refine and apply to individual print work.

The unit applies to highly skilled visual artists who integrate the use of those different techniques explored, to realise a coherent body of creative work. They work with a high level of independence seeking mentoring and guidance as required.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Unit Sector

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Research printmaking ideas and techniques

1.1 Expand knowledge of historical and contemporary printmaking using credible information sources

1.2 Investigate how different technical effects are achieved through particular print techniques

1.3 Evaluate the relationships between printmaking techniques and design ideas

1.4 Adapt and use relevant ideas and approaches that comply with intellectual property requirements

2. Select printmaking techniques for refinement

2.1 Evaluate creative and professional opportunities offered by different printmaking techniques for own approach to work

2.2 Identify and assess limitations and constraints of print techniques

2.3 Select a broad range of printmaking techniques for refinement

3. Consolidate printmaking technique to professional level

3.1 Develop confidence and skill through practice and experimentation of chosen print techniques

3.2 Identify and resolve technical problems in printmaking based on developing expertise

3.3 Employ creative thinking techniques to encourage new and unpredictable ideas to emerge

3.4 Evolve ideas and other professional skills through ongoing experimentation with technique

3.5 Create individual style by developing own ways of working with new and existing print techniques

3.6 Create a coherent body of prints that shows command of selected printmaking techniques

4. Evaluate own printmaking technique

4.1 Evaluate development of own technique with others and seek feedback

4.2 Participate in professional discussions that challenge and explore different concepts and approaches

4.3 Evaluate ways that experimentation with different techniques has informed own artwork

4.4 Identify ways to further develop technique as part of professional practice and build ideas into future work

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.

S KILL

DESCRIPTION

  • Interprets and evaluates complex and unfamiliar information when considering design ideas identifying key information about techniques

Oral Communication

  • Uses questioning and active listening techniques to elicit feedback and confirm understanding
  • Initiates and participates in complex discussions, encouraging contributions, eliciting different perspectives on creative and technical ideas, clarifying, summarising and building constructively on the input of others

Self-management

  • Takes responsibility for compliance with legal, safety and sustainability practices associated with creative work
  • Manages own decisions about refinement of techniques through research and selection according to interest

Teamwork

  • Encourages contribution of creative, innovative and technical ideas from other artists
  • Fosters a collaborative approach to professional skills development through sharing and receiving knowledge, experience and information with other artists

Initiative and enterprise

  • Creates opportunities to use a more innovative approach and personal style
