Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan and finish print works which are reviewed and adjusted during the work in progress.

The unit applies to those who are still developing their expertise in design and technique. They work under supervision but have some independence and use discretion and judgement within defined guidelines.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

ELEMENT 

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Plan printmaking work

1.1 Explore ideas and techniques for own prints in consultation with required personnel

1.2 Clarify and confirm ideas for printmaking based on exploration, discussion and consideration of intellectual property requirements

1.3 Assess effects of different print techniques through experimentation with samples, practice pieces or works in progress

1.4 Select techniques that best support ideas for own work

2. Prepare, maintain and store printmaking resources

2.1 Calculate, select and organise type and quantity of printmaking equipment, tools and materials based on the needs of the chosen work

2.2 Prepare, maintain and dispose of equipment, tools and materials according to workplace safety and sustainability requirements

2.3 Clean and store equipment, tools and materials according to specific needs of different items

3. Create finished prints

3.1 Create desired design effects in print works using combined print techniques, considering and applying elements and principles of design

3.2 Handle equipment, tools and materials safely and minimise waste throughout all processes

3.4 Review work in progress and make adjustments where required

3.4 Add value to current and future work process and document the work progress for future reference

3.5 Liaise with others to obtain and consider feedback on print design, technical proficiency of work and success in communicating ideas

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • produce print works according to two different design ideas.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • explore ideas, techniques and historical and contemporary printmaking practice
  • identify and acquire resources required to complete chosen work
  • create major work through the adaption and implementation of printmaking techniques that show technical proficiency
  • review and document the work process.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • basic intellectual property considerations for printmaking work
  • methods of exploring techniques to achieve different effects in printmaking
  • main aspects of historical and contemporary printmaking practice and how they can inform own design ideas
  • elements and principles of design:
  • the key characteristics
  • key interrelationships and use in prints
  • tools and equipment used to produce prints:
  • key physical features and uses
  • cleaning and maintenance techniques
  • storage requirements
  • physical properties and capabilities of a range of materials and techniques used to produce prints
  • typical work space requirements for producing prints, including ways of organising space and equipment for efficient work operation
  • procedures for working safely with printmaking materials, tools and equipment.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • equipment, tools and materials used to produce prints
  • credible information sources.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
