Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required by singers, actors, dancers, circus performers and comedians to refine performance and interpretive skills to perform complex roles, sequences and routines before audiences.
The unit applies to those who are performers working in commercial, competitive or community settings in ensembles, partnerships or solo performances. Performers are expected to display a high level of motivation and sense of responsibility for themselves and others involved in live performances.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence
The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:
- perform live before an audience on at least three different occasions in a way that demonstrates refined performance techniques.
In the course of the above, the candidate must:
- demonstrate responsibility in working on solo or extra group sections
- show initiative in working towards cohesive group performances
- contribute to the advancement of creative and artistic goals with increasing confidence and skill
- create complex sequences in relation to chosen performance technique
- adapt performances to the required scale and nature of venues, including audience requirements
- analyse own performance and apply constructive feedback
- demonstrate a consistent standard throughout performance
- demonstrate a professional work ethic
- demonstrate consistent concentration.
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:
- key theorists, choreographers, theatre directors and movement styles and forms relevant to chosen performance technique
- work health and safety (WHS) standards relevant to performing live before audiences
- historical and theoretical contexts for performance and their importance in informing own artistic practice
- strategies for effectively managing performance anxiety
- improvisation techniques
- techniques for demonstrating professional work ethic and consistent concentration
- seek and respond to constructive feedback on own performance and apply to future performances
- key aspects of the following as they relate to chosen performance technique:
- moral, social, physical and psychological issues associated with characterisation
- naturalistic and non-naturalistic performance styles
- effect of voice and vocal processes on audiences
- alignment, breath and techniques for the release of tension
- kinaesthetic awareness
- warm-up and cool-down techniques
- body alignment
- performance terminology
- relationship between performers and audiences
- stylistic nuances and dramatic elements associated with various performance styles
- cultural perspectives related to performance.
Assessment Conditions
Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.
This includes access to:
- rehearsal and performance opportunities
- source materials and texts required to demonstrate the performance evidence.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
