Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to rehearse and perform as a solo performer in a musical theatre production.
The unit applies to those who are performers and who apply their acting, dancing and singing skills in a solo performance in a musical theatre production. Supervision is provided in practice sessions and rehearsals. However, performers are expected to display a high level of responsibility for themselves and others during performances.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare for rehearsals

Performance Evidence
The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:
- perform solo before an audience in at least one musical theatre production.
In the course of the above, the candidate must:
- demonstrate the following technical capabilities:
- voice, movement and space in solo performances to communicate meaning and enhance characterisation
- speech, singing and movement with confidence and spontaneity to demonstrate command of the role
- sustained complex characterisation through musicality, dance and voice phrasing, and correct timing as choreographed
- adherence to style required in the context of performance
- staging and special effects
- follow safe movement and vocal practices during rehearsals and performances
- demonstrate progression of performance skills over the rehearsal period
- improve own performance in response to constructive feedback
- contribute to evaluations of performances
- work collaboratively with production team members and other performers.
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:
- principles underlying dance movements and techniques in a musical theatre performance context
- principles underlying vocal techniques in a musical theatre performance context
- techniques for integrating dance, movement, acting and singing in performances
- stage layout and directions
- working collaboratively in teams
- musical elements
- health and safety issues for performing in a musical theatre context, including those relating to:
- hearing protection
- protection of body against injury from overuse
- safe lifting procedures
- strategies to overcome performance anxiety
- access to mental wellbeing resources
- issues and challenges that arise when rehearsing and performing
- theories relating to giving and receiving constructive feedback
- evaluation of others’ performances
- performance and rehearsal protocols
- relationship between rehearsals and performances.
Assessment Conditions
Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.
This includes access to opportunities to perform in a real or simulated musical.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
