Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to produce creative photo images using photo lighting techniques.

The unit applies to those who select and control lighting and light quality when producing photo images taken in the studio and on location. At this level, work is usually carried out independently, with supervision or guidance available where required.

No licensing, legislative or certification conditions apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Unit Sector

Visual Communication – Photo Imaging

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Research lighting techniques

1.1 Identify and review range of historical and contemporary sources of lighting techniques

1.2 Examine theories of light and their application in photo imaging

1.3 Prepare shoot list for range of lighting experiments and confirm lighting techniques and schema with required personnel

2. Experiment with light for complex subjects

2.1 Arrange shoot requirements for identified lighting experiments

2.2 Explore lighting subjects in range of different locations

2.3 Apply lighting techniques and technology safely in experimental process

2.4 Adapt lighting techniques to photo imaging work when reviewing processes

2.5 Document results of experiments for incorporation into future works

3. Apply lighting techniques

3.1 Produce series of photo images using appropriate lighting techniques and technology

3.2 Evaluate effectiveness of lighting techniques and technology and note areas for improvement

3.3 Catalogue research reference material and work samples

3.4 Identify future opportunities, work directions, equipment needs and workflow changes resulting from photo lighting experiments

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.

S KILL

DESCRIPTION

Reading

  • Interprets and evaluates extensive visual and textual information when researching and applying photo lighting techniques

Writing

  • Records accurate details of intended lighting experiments, outcomes and improvements using clear language and industry-specific terminology

Oral Communication

  • Participates in discussions with others to clarify approach to work
  • Uses listening and questioning to confirm understanding

Self-management

  • Adheres to safety practices and requirements when using lighting equipment and technology in photographic shoots
  • Takes responsibility for ownership of most aspects of own work, identifying improvements and the practical aspects of implementing changes in own practice

Planning and organising

  • Plans the strategic and operational potential of new technology
  • Selects criteria and conditions for lighting work, evaluates processes and refines technique
  • Ensures objectives are met through reviewing the effectiveness of technical and aesthetic decisions
  • Analyses lighting activities and outcomes to decide on changes required in work practice

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • explore at least two different lighting techniques and apply technique to photo imaging work.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • research and apply the theory of light to experiments with lighting techniques and technology
  • experiment with lighting a subject in different locations, including:
  • artificial light
  • natural light
  • achieve a range of different lighting effects on photo imaging work
  • prepare and organise shoot list requirements for lighting experiments and productions
  • document lighting experiments and store research materials and work samples appropriately.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • theories of light relevant to photo imaging
  • uses and capabilities of photographic lighting equipment and accessories
  • technology used to generate, harness and use lighting in photo imaging work
  • lighting processes that create emotive and descriptive effects.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • locations and studios for photo imaging shoots
  • photo imaging production equipment
  • credible sources of information on lighting techniques and technology.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
