Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to capture images using drone technology in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and national operating standards.

It applies to individuals who produce photographs for print or electronic media and for different contexts including weddings, special events, portraits, forensics, art photography and specialist publications. At this level, work would be undertaken independently, but within established parameters and under supervision and guidance.

No licensing, legislative or certification conditions apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare to capture images

1.1 Discuss photographic project with required personnel and select required camera and accessories

1.2 Confirm digital camera features meet project requirements

1.3 Prepare required flight maps, aeronautical charts and weather briefings

1.4 Plan for effects of wind velocity, adverse environmental conditions and contingency actions

1.5 Plan digital camera features, lighting, photographic design elements and photographic techniques according to project requirements

2. Capture images

2.1 Conduct drone technology departure procedures

2.2 Operate digital camera according to manufacturer specifications

2.3 Set digital camera preferences and use photographic techniques according to desired results

2.4 Adjust planned shots as required and experiment with different ways of achieving desired results

2.5 Identify effects of wind velocity and adverse environmental and respond as required

2.6 Land drone in defined landing zone in accordance with requirements

2.7 Perform documented shutdown procedures

3. Review images

3.1 Download digital images using required digital imaging software

3.2 Rotate, cull, sort and rename images to meet requirements

3.3 Apply metadata and key words to images as required

3.4 Back up files of images and archive as required

3.5 Seek feedback from others on quality of original captures and note areas for improvement

4. Complete post-shoot activities

4.1 Clean and care for equipment according to manufacturer instructions

4.2 Report damage to equipment to required personnel according to procedures

4.3 Transport and store equipment according to procedures

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • capture images using drone technology on at least three different occasions according to project requirements.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • apply drone piloting skills according to requirements during departure and landing
  • use digital camera to capture photo images according to requirements
  • store images and equipment according to workplace requirements
  • comply with regulatory requirements of Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and national operating standards.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • basic techniques for planning shots using drone technology
  • features of standard digital cameras and how these impact on photographic capability
  • elements and principles of design for photo images
  • cleaning techniques for drones, cameras and accessories
  • issues that may arise in context of drone photographic shoots, and how to deal with these, including potential impacts of weather on drone technology
  • techniques and principles for operating drone technology
  • industry-standard drone technology used to capture images
  • work health and safety, regulatory requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and national operating standards relating to operating drone technology for photographic shoots
  • ways to use metadata for categorising photographic images.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • equipment, tools and materials used to capture images using drone technology
  • required information sources.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
