Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare to work with confronting material and processes in the creative industries. It involves being informed about working with confronting material, identifying areas of own work that could involve interacting with confronting material and developing a risk management plan with strategies to manage one’s own response when working with confronting materials and processes.

The unit applies to those who work in creative arts and cultural contexts who may be exposed to sensitive, confronting and complex material and processes that require a risk management plan to manage one’s own response.

This unit is not intended to address the requirements in Work, Health and Safety (WHS) laws.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

2.4 Identify policies, reporting processes and procedures related to working with confronting material and processes

3. Develop risk management plan

3.1 List possible risks of working with confronting material and processes and assess possible impact of risks on self

4. Review current circumstances and monitor risk management plan

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • prepare to work with confronting material or processes on at least one occasion.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • Create a risk management plan for managing own response when working with confronting materials and processes.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • work health and safety (WHS) requirements related to working with confronting material and processes, including:
  • requirements of workers
  • requirements of organisations
  • aspects of these requirements which relate to the performance evidence
  • new and existing issues considered sensitive or confronting
  • sources of information for updating knowledge relating to confronting material and processes
  • key features of risk management plans, including:
  • identifying risk to self and others
  • assessing the risk and the likelihood of risk in various situations
  • controlling the risk
  • reviewing controls
  • risk management application methods for own wellbeing, including:
  • identifying confronting material and processes risk triggers for self
  • assessing the likelihood of self-risk in various situations that incorporate confronting materials and processes
  • applying self-awareness practices and mechanisms that control the risk
  • reviewing controls
  • mental wellbeing aid practices
  • key strategies for supporting own mental wellbeing relating to working with confronting material and processes, including withdrawing from continuing a piece of work
  • risk factors that may negatively impact mental health and wellbeing types of and processes for accessing support resources relating to working with confronting material and processes
  • process improvement options for addressing strategies related to working with confronting materials and processes.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry. Real situations should not be used in the assessment where doing so may result in risk to the mental health and wellbeing of self.

This includes access to:

  • mental wellbeing resources and support services

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Assessment must involve persons with current and relevant experience in mental health and wellbeing.
