Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform music from written notation.

The unit applies to those who work as instrumentalists and vocalists and who are developing their ability to interpret notated music conventions and apply music reading skills to suit different performance contexts.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

ELEMENT

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Practise playing or singing notated music

1.1 Discuss and select repertoire for practice and performance with required personnel

1.2 Analyse musical conventions for chord sequences and music systems, rhythms, time signatures and beat patterns relevant to selected instrument or voice

1.3 Practise reading music with realisation of rhythmic, melodic and harmonic ideas according to own instrument or voice

1.4 Adhere to required conventions of form and music structures

1.5 Interpret dynamics and expression marks

1.6 Practise demonstrating accuracy of intonation according to repertoire requirements

1.7 Seek feedback on performance in practice sessions from required personnel and adjust techniques as required

2. Present performances of notated music

2.1 Undertake warm-up and tuning routine as required for selected music

2.2 Perform melodic and rhythmic structures of music accurately according to repertoire requirements

2.3 Perform harmonic structures where required

2.4 Demonstrate required stylistic conventions according to repertoire requirements

2.5 Listen to own playing or singing and adjust performance in the context of a group performance if required

2.6 Follow work health and safety (WHS) principles relevant to reading music and performing

2.7 Recognise and mitigate errors in performance

3. Evaluate music reading skills

3.1 Identify personal strengths and weaknesses in music reading and develop future practice goals

3.2 Research repertoire for developing reading skills in consultation with required personnel

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • perform at least three different musical pieces from written notation.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • follow conventions of selected music, adjusting own performance as required
  • apply knowledge of style and genre to performance
  • follow work health and safety (WHS) principles when reading music and performing.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • conventions of written music notation and how they are used in performance
  • different musical genres and styles, and their musical forms and conventions in written notation
  • ways to improve interpretation of notated music and music reading skills
  • WHS principles that apply to reading and performing music
  • issues and challenges that arise in context of performing music from written notation and strategies for overcoming them.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • a selection of notated music
  • instruments, equipment and performance space required to demonstrate the performance evidence.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
