Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use digital media technology and software and apply it to perform a range of musical pieces.

The unit applies to those who have a high level of musical aptitude and experience and who are incorporating digital media into performance.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Generate ideas for performing using digital media

1.1 Listen to or view recordings of performances that incorporate digital media into the performance and consider how this can be applied to own music performance

1.2 Discuss and evaluate ideas for performance with required personnel

1.3 Seek and incorporate feedback into preparation of digital media performance

2. Prepare to use digital media in performances

2.1 Test and apply different techniques for using digital media in musical performance

2.2 Test different sounds that can be incorporated into own performance

2.3 Identify factors that may affect use of digital media in performance in consultation with required personnel

2.4 Generate ways to use digital media as performance instrument and to perform planned sound consistently

2.5 Develop technical skills for using digital media in performance in rehearsals and practice sessions

3. Perform a range of pieces

3.1 Set up and test instruments and equipment according to safe work practices

3.2 Play pieces using required rhythmic detail, dynamic range and variations in technique

3.3 Demonstrate variations in sound and tone using technical skills

3.4 Perform work following notated instructions where required

4. Review use of digital media in performances

4.1 Evaluate own use of digital media in performance and identify development areas

4.2 Seek and discuss feedback on using digital media from required personnel and develop strategies for future improvement

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • generate ideas for and perform at least two different musical pieces using digital media.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • develop a plan to use digital media in performance
  • follow safe work practices
  • demonstrate technical skills, including:
  • rhythmic detail and dynamic range
  • variation in sound and tone.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • ways in which digital media can be used to perform music
  • features of digital media equipment and related software used in music performance
  • factors that may affect the use of digital media in performance
  • rhythmic detail, dynamic range and variations in technique, sound and tone used when performing music using digital media
  • work health and safety practices, procedures and standards as they apply to using digital media and technology in performance
  • strategies to evaluate and improve own performance and respond to feedback.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • industry-standard digital media and required related software
  • instruments and equipment for performance
  • a suitable acoustic space required to perform music.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
