Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop instrumental techniques and apply them when performing a range of repertoire.

The unit applies to those who perform as instrumentalists and are developing competence to perform in public. They plan practice regularly and take initiative to act on feedback from colleagues and mentors.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT 

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA 

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare to use instrument

1.1 Determine own development goals in consultation with required personnel

1.2 Listen to the work of professional musicians and identify techniques that can be applied to own music practice

1.3 Care for, move, use and store instrument in line with work, health and safety (WHS) principles

1.4 Set up instrument and undertake warm up routine in preparation for practice and performance

1.5 Care for instrument and enhance performance outcomes using instrumental accessories, fittings, maintenance and cleaning products

1.6 Tune instrument to required standard and according to tuning conventions

2. Develop techniques on instrument

2.1 Identify technical weaknesses and plan practice strategies to overcome them in consultation with required personnel

2.2 Demonstrate control over physical characteristics and range of chosen instrument

2.3 Develop musical expression using practice sessions and by applying a range of techniques

2.4 Learn and practise a set of exercises or studies that demonstrate technical fluency in identified areas of weakness

2.5 Seek feedback on own skill development from required personnel and adjust focus of practice sessions as required

3. Perform pieces from a range of repertoire

3.1 Plan repertoire that advances performance skills in consultation with required personnel

3.2 Produce sound consistently in line with selected musical style and repertoire

3.3 Listen critically while playing and adjust intonation and musical techniques as required

3.4 Play pieces with melodic and/or rhythmic precision, attention to dynamic range and variations in technique as required

3.5 Perform all pieces following agreed tempi and musical markings where required

3.6 Evaluate own performance against identified goals

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • perform at least three different musical pieces on selected instrument, demonstrating developed instrumental techniques.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • plan and practise a selected set of exercises or studies, using feedback from others and adjusting focus of practice
  • demonstrate use of correct postural, finger, hand and body positions in line with work health and safety (WHS) principles
  • use aural skills to monitor and adjust own performance and achieve required sound.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • elements of chosen instrument, including:
  • accessories
  • applications
  • range
  • capabilities
  • tuning conventions
  • care and maintenance methods
  • instrumental elements and techniques, including:
  • sound and tone
  • intonation
  • melodic and rhythmic precision
  • dynamic range
  • musical expression
  • repertoire suitable to chosen instrument
  • exercises for developing techniques on chosen instrument
  • strategies to evaluate own performance
  • WHS principles as they apply to correct posture and practices when performing using an instrument.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • instruments and equipment required to demonstrate the performance evidence
  • an acoustic space required to perform musical pieces.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
