Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for musicians to plan, organise, perform and finalise music demos in audio or video formats.
The unit applies to those who work as musicians or band members, and wish to work with recording personnel, to create a music demo for the public, music agents, record companies and media outlets.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Plan music demo recording |
1.1 Identify purpose of music demo 1.2 Discuss image and style of performance to be recorded with required personnel and select most suitable music 1.3 Agree on repertoire balance of original material and covers to be performed 1.4 Discuss and confirm details of creative collaboration with other performers 1.5 Agree on method and format for final recording according to music demo purpose 1.6 Allocate relevant performing artist roles and responsibilities in demo production process 1.7 Develop recording plan accounting for required factors |
2. Record music demo |
2.1 Set up instruments and equipment in collaboration with required personnel 2.2 Record selected tracks with required personnel and using music technology and software as required 2.3 Observe work health and safety (WHS) principles in recording environment 2.4 Show respect for skills of others, communicate professionally with session personnel and follow recording protocols and conventions 2.5 Maintain a professional working relationship with all involved in recording to achieve agreed outcomes |
3. Finalise demo recording |
3.1 Listen to and review rough mixes in line with music demo purpose 3.2 Participate in mixing of recording with required personnel as required 3.3 Review final mix, and discuss and negotiate refinements as required 3.4 Confirm final recording is in required format for distribution 3.5 Evaluate process of producing demo recording from artist viewpoint and note areas for future improvement |
