Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, organise and implement the recording of music demos in audio or video formats.

It applies to individuals who work as musicians or band members, and wish to promote their work to the public, music agents, record companies and media outlets.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Plan a music demo recording

1.1 Identify the purpose of the music demo

1.2 Discuss with appropriate people the image and style of the performance to be recorded, and select the most appropriate music

1.3 Agree on repertoire balance and original material and covers to be performed

1.4 Discuss and confirm all details of creative collaboration with other performers

1.5 Agree on method and format for final recording

1.6 Allocate roles and responsibilities in the demo production process

1.7 Develop a recording plan that takes into account personnel, scheduling, rehearsing, equipment, suitable reviewing processes and other factors as required

2. Work collaboratively with recording personnel

2.1 Collaborate with technical personnel to ensure that instruments and equipment are set up to avoid undue interruption during the recording process

2.2 Observe work health and safety (WHS) principles in the prevention of injury and stress in the recording environment

2.3 Show respect for the skills of others, communicate professionally with session personnel and follow recording protocols and conventions

2.4 Maintain a professional working relationship with all involved in the recording to achieve agreed outcomes

3. Finalise demo recording

3.1 Listen to and review rough mixes

3.2 Contribute to the mixing and mastering of the recording as required

3.3 Review the final mix, and discuss and negotiate refinements as required

3.4 Confirm that the final recording is in the required format for distribution

3.5 Evaluate the process of producing the demo recording, and note areas for future improvement

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • plan a music demo in collaboration with others
  • develop a recording plan for a music demo recording
  • collaborate with relevant people to record and finalise a demo.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

  • outline factors to be considered in planning a music demo
  • describe recording protocols, conventions and procedures
  • describe elements of musical arrangement and organisation in relation to content of the demo recording
  • describe characteristics and potential of different file formats for editing, production and distribution of the music demo
  • outline issues and challenges that arise when making a music demo and how they may be overcome
  • describe work health and safety procedures as they relate to recording plans and sessions.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

  • instruments and equipment
  • appropriate studios and rehearsal facilities.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
