Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply knowledge of music genres and styles to music industry work and learning.

It applies to individuals preparing to enter the music industry who may be intending to work in areas as diverse as music performance, music promotion, sound recording, live sound production, marketing or management.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Develop music knowledge

1.1 Identify and use appropriate sources of information about various musical genres and styles, and their historical or social contexts

1.2 Analyse various musical genres and styles to identify their artistic and commercial qualities and features

1.3 Analyse music artists, repertoire and trends through discussion of music performances

2. Use listening skills to analyse music

2.1 Develop listening skills for live and recorded music to identify musical structures and use of technology in identified musical genre or style

2.2 Listen critically to identified artists and repertoire, and compare actual performance against artistic and commercial intention, qualities and features

2.3 Assess the contribution of technical and sound production to live and recorded music products

3. Maintain music knowledge

3.1 Identify and use strategies to further develop music knowledge, ideas and listening skills

3.2 Review and update knowledge of selected musical styles, artists and repertoire using appropriate information sources

3.3 Use knowledge of genre, style, artists and repertoire in own music or industry practice

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • develop, maintain and apply current music knowledge to own learning and industry practice
  • differentiate music genres and styles
  • discuss music performances with others using appropriate terminology
  • listen and evaluate the music of a range of artists.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

  • explain the features of styles and genres, and their conventions
  • explain how elements of musical organisation and technology are used in identified genres and styles
  • describe the key qualities and features of the work of selected artists
  • outline critical listening techniques.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

  • current music industry information
  • music in different styles and genres
  • interaction with others.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
