Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to explore and use a range of combined techniques to produce finished jewellery pieces from design concepts which are reviewed and adjusted during the work in progress. It involves the planning, design and creation of jewellery pieces.

The unit applies to those still developing their expertise in design and technique. They work under supervision but have some independence and use discretion and judgement within defined guidelines.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Plan jewellery work

1.1 Analyse design techniques for own jewellery pieces in consultation with other artists

1.2 Study historical and contemporary jewellery-making practice as a potential source of ideas

1.3 Confirm ideas for jewellery pieces based on analysis, discussion and consideration of requirements

1.4 Assess jewellery-making techniques through application and testing

1.5 Select techniques that best support ideas for own work

2. Prepare, maintain and store jewellery-making materials

2.1 Organise tools and materials based on the needs of the chosen jewellery project

2.2 Prepare, maintain and dispose of equipment according to workplace safety and sustainability requirements

2.3 Clean and store equipment according to specific needs of different items

3. Create jewellery

3.1 Use and adapt combined jewellery-making techniques to create desired effects, considering and applying elements and principles of design

3.2 Review work in progress and make adjustments as required

3.3 Handle equipment, tools and materials safely and minimise waste

3.4 Document work progress for future reference

3.5 Seek feedback from other artists on technical proficiency of work

Performance Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • produce at least two pieces of jewellery combining at least two different ideas.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • explore ideas, techniques and historical and contemporary jewellery-making practice and choose techniques to support own work
  • identify and acquire resources required to complete chosen work
  • adapt and use combined jewellery-making techniques that show technical proficiency in chosen techniques
  • review and document the work process.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • intellectual property requirements when producing jewellery work
  • methods of exploring techniques to achieve different effects in jewellery
  • main aspects of historical and contemporary jewellery-making practice and how they inform own design ideas
  • key characteristics and key interrelationships of elements and principles of design, and their use in jewellery
  • tools and equipment used to produce jewellery: key physical features and uses, cleaning and maintenance techniques and storage requirements
  • physical properties and capabilities of a range of materials and techniques used to produce jewellery
  • typical work space requirements for producing jewellery and ways of organising space and equipment for efficient work operation
  • procedures for working safely with jewellery materials, tools and equipment.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • equipment, tools and materials used to produce jewellery
  • information sources.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
