Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to design and produce functional or artistic glass objects using kiln casting techniques. It involves research to develop own design and refinement of kiln casting technique through experimentation and dedicated practice.

The unit applies to visual artists who are highly skilled in the specific techniques for kiln cast glasswork and who realise an individual professional style and a coherent body of creative work. They work with a high level of independence seeking mentoring and guidance as required.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Develop ideas for kiln cast glass

1.1 Identify and evaluate creative and professional kiln cast glasswork opportunities for own work

1.2 Research ideas for kiln cast glasswork from historical and contemporary sources

1.3 Research, adapt and use ideas and approaches from other practitioners

1.4 Identify and comply with copyright and intellectual property requirements

1.5 Refine ideas and create designs for different kiln cast glass objects that meet needs of professional practice

2. Establish requirements for kiln cast glass

2.1 Identify safety and sustainability requirements for kiln glasswork

2.2 Establish, follow and monitor safe work requirements identified

2.3 Set up work space, equipment, tools and materials according to safety requirements

2.4 Plan firing schedules for different forms

2.5 Investigate and test processes for kiln cast glasswork on samples or practice pieces

3. Kiln cast glass forms

3.1 Determine and use required forming methods and techniques for different objects

3.2 Make kiln cast glass objects according to design requirements for form and function

3.3 Define form using glassworking techniques

3.4 Prepare articles for further surface treatment and finishing

3.5 Use required finishing techniques on kiln cast objects

4. Refine kiln cast glass techniques

4.1 Evolve ideas and professional skill with kiln glass objects using ongoing experimentation with technique

4.2 Create individual style using own ways of working with kiln glass techniques

4.3 Identify and resolve technical problems in kiln cast glass projects as required

4.4 Produce coherent body of kiln cast glasswork showing command of selected glassworking techniques

5. Evaluate own kiln cast glasswork

5.1 Evaluate development of own technique for kiln cast glasswork using feedback from others

5.2 Identify ways to further develop kiln glass techniques and incorporate ideas into future work

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • produce at least three kiln cast glassworks using process of experimentation and practice and refinement of techniques, which:
  • demonstrates command of chosen techniques in both single works and multiples of related works
  • demonstrates development of individual style
  • supports own ideas for work.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • research different historical and contemporary kiln cast glasswork and techniques to inform own designs
  • apply work health and safety (WHS) and sustainability practices
  • identify and comply with copyright and intellectual property requirements.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • copyright and intellectual property requirements required for producing glassworks
  • historical and contemporary influences applicable to refining kiln cast glass techniques
  • detailed characteristics and complex interrelationships relating of elements and principles of design used in kiln cast glasswork, and how they may be challenged
  • features and use of:
  • open moulds
  • investment (closed) moulds
  • flat, tall and hollow forms
  • thin and thick casts
  • simple and complex forms
  • factors to consider when planning firing schedules, including:
  • complexity of form and its mould
  • glass manufacturer’s recommended annealing schedules
  • material condition of mould
  • number of moulds in kiln
  • thickness of form
  • type of glass being used
  • type of kiln being used
  • features of kiln casting techniques and how they achieve different effects in kiln cast glasswork, including:
