Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and assist with teaching dance classes.

The unit applies to those who are assistant dance teachers and senior students with several years of dance experience who teach basic dance techniques to younger and newer students. Classes are conducted in dance studios or in venues such as community halls that are equipped for the safe teaching of dance. Individuals operate under the guidance and supervision of senior dance teachers, but some autonomy is expected when they are teaching classes.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare for dance classes

1.1 Discuss and determine aims for dance class in consultation with a senior dance teacher

1.2 Contribute to planning and selecting music and choreography for dance class

1.3 Determine characteristics, needs and expectations of dance class participants

1.4 Identify special requirements for dance class according to participant needs and identify sources of support when required

1.5 Confirm and set up equipment and resources required for dance class

1.6 Discuss safe teaching strategies required for teaching context with a senior dance teacher

1.7 Confirm that dance environment complies with organisational policies and procedures

2. Conduct classes

2.1 Communicate instructions and information to participants in a professional manner and using dance teaching terminology

2.2 Monitor participant progress against class aims during dance class

2.3 Assist in implementing teaching methods and strategies according to class aims, and modify as required

2.4 Assist participants to perform dance moves and make required corrections

2.5 Explain the importance of individuals seeking and providing feedback regarding their progress during the class

2.6 Assist in implementing injury-prevention strategies and providing first aid for minor injuries sustained in classes, as required

3. Evaluate classes

3.1 Seek feedback from own dance teacher and class participants

3.2 Identify and discuss with required personnel opportunities for improvement in future classes

3.3 Evaluate own performance and identify areas for improvements

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • assist in planning and teaching at least three different dance classes that respond to the needs and capabilities of individual participants.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • use safe teaching methods and strategies
  • monitor the progress of participants and adjust in response to changing situations
  • provide positive and constructive feedback to participants to encourage motivation, self-esteem and self-expression
  • evaluate own performance and identify opportunities to improve teaching skills.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • safety practices and factors in the context of assisting in teaching a dance class, including:
  • basic first aid procedures for enabling effective management of injuries that may occur during classes
  • testing and checking techniques relating to safe use of equipment used in classes
  • common injuries sustained through dance
  • safe dance practices that can be implemented during dance classes
  • safety issues and challenges that may arise in a teaching context
  • common genres and styles of dance
  • organisational procedures required to demonstrate the performance evidence
  • dance vocabulary and terminology required to demonstrate the performance evidence
  • teaching methods and strategies used in dance classes
  • health and other factors affecting learners’ ability to participate in dance classes
  • anatomy and physiology of basic body structures
  • basic principles of dance analysis and correction techniques
  • evaluation processes that allow for improvements to be made to classes.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • teaching resources and equipment
  • opportunities for assisting teaching of dance classes
  • a venue with space and flooring required for the safe teaching of dance.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
