Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to analyse and integrate the rhythm of music into dance and movement routines.

The unit applies to those who are dancers and other performers who would usually be performing as members of an ensemble, though some solo work could be expected. It also applies to individuals involved in fitness and wellbeing activities that use a range of body movement techniques with music. At this level work is normally supervised, though some autonomy and judgement can be expected within established parameters.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Analyse music and rhythm

1.1 Identify different styles of music compositions and sounds

1.2 Discuss with required personnel relationship between dance or movement techniques and musical elements

1.3 Identify and discuss ways of developing own expression skills with required personnel

1.4 Identify characteristics of musical genre or style of different pieces of music

1.5 Identify sources that can be used to update knowledge of terminology in relation to music and movement

2. Prepare for and perform integrated music and movement activities

2.1 Devise own physical conditioning program, accounting for common health issues of performers

2.2 Confirm with required personnel intention of dance or movement sequences to be performed and genre of music that will be used

2.3 Perform basic warm-up and warm-down activities according to safe dance practices

2.4 Confirm performance preparation is in line with intention and requirements of dance or movement performance

2.5 Confirm personal presentation is suited to dance or movement sequence and performance intention

2.6 Integrate artistic expression and basic locomotor body movements into performance sequences

2.7 Improvise dance or body movement sequences according to selected musical genre or style

3. Review performance and development of skills

3.1 Evaluate own performance and development of skills in exploring rhythm in the context of performing dance or movement technique

3.2 Seek coaching and feedback from others on performance of integrated movement and music activities, and develop ways to improve own skills

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • perform at least two different basic rhythmic movement sequences, at least one of which must be in an ensemble and at least one of which must be performed solo, that demonstrate:
  • kinaesthetic awareness
  • knowledge of human movement principles
  • knowledge of different styles and genres of music
  • relationship between elements of music and rhythmic body movements.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • apply safe movement practices and injury-prevention techniques
  • demonstrate use of aural and movement memory
  • identifies and applies different responses to music and rhythms through physical movement.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • components of a physical conditioning program
  • common health issues for performers that need to be considered when preparing for and performing dance or movement activities
  • terminology in relation to music and movement
  • strategies to evaluate performance and respond to coaching to develop techniques
  • key aspects of participating in dance or movement activities, including:
  • musical instruments and composition techniques of selected musical style or genre
  • principles of choreography and sequencing of movements
  • musical rhythms
  • music terminology
  • lighting
  • costumes
  • make-up
  • props
  • principles relating to physical movements and techniques, including:
  • relationship with gravity
  • spatial awareness
  • successional movement
  • use of breath
  • folding
  • extending
  • rotating
  • shifting weight
  • principles of safe dance practice and injury prevention, including those relating to:
  • articulation of the spine
  • engagement of the feet
  • bases of support, including feet, legs, hands, arms and torso
  • range of motion of the joints
  • differentiation of the legs and pelvis.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • instruments, equipment and music required to demonstrate the performance evidence
  • venue with required space, acoustic qualities and flooring for performing dance and movement sequences
  • interaction with others required to demonstrate the performance evidence.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
