Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to review street dance as an art form and build a solid foundation in street dance techniques under the supervision of experienced dancers or dance teachers.

The unit applies to those who have little or no practical experience in street dance. They may be applying the movements they learn to impromptu solo or group performances in public spaces, which may be outdoor or indoor.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA 

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Discuss street dance culture and history

1.1 Discuss aspects of street dance culture and history with required personnel

1.2 Use street dance terminology when required in discussions with others

2. Practise simple street dance movements

2.1 Perform warm-up exercises under the guidance of supervisor according to safe dance practices

2.2 Practise basic steps associated with selected style of street dancing

2.3 Incorporate musicality, timing and rhythm into exercises

2.4 Identify and work within own physical limits according to safe dance practices

2.5 Respond to constructive feedback and advice from required personnel during practice sessions

2.6 Complete cool-down exercises according to safe dance practices

3. Perform short street dance sequences

3.1 Agree on sequences that include a range of movements in consultation with required personnel, according to own technical ability

3.2 Match personal presentation to selected style of street dance

3.3 Communicate mood and style of dance according to requirements of the dance sequence

3.4 Demonstrate awareness of movement, timing and rhythm in performance

4. Review performances and set goals

4.1 Evaluate own performance and development of foundation street dance techniques

4.2 Seek and use coaching from others to identify areas where own street dance technique can be improved

4.3 Set goals for improvement and develop a plan to achieve them

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • perform at least two street dance sequences.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • demonstrate a range of foundational street dance techniques
  • respond to constructive coaching on own performance
  • demonstrate message of dance sequences using performance skills
  • follow safe dance practices.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • street dance terminology
  • warm-up and cool-down routines
  • foundational street dance techniques
  • required clothing and footwear for performing street dance
  • implications of the improvised nature of street dancing for learning and performance
  • safe dance practices in the context of practising and performing basic street dance
  • music and dance trends in, and evolution of street dance
  • strategies to evaluate performance and respond to coaching to set goals to improve techniques.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to dance performance areas or spaces suitable for street dance.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
