Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to build a solid foundation in tap dance technique under the supervision of experienced dancers and dance teachers.

The unit applies to those who have no prior training or some dance experience, with an aptitude for dance and an interest in developing tap dance technique.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA 

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Practise barre work

1.1 Perform stretching exercises under guidance of supervisor

1.2 Perform exercises that develop coordination and balance of arm and lower limb movements

1.3 Practise using arm lines

1.4 Create and control sound using feet

1.5 Incorporate a sense of timing and rhythm into exercise

2. Practise dance centre amalgamations

2.1 Perform exercises away from the barre and develop an awareness of personal and general space when travelling and stationary

2.2 Practise jumping and using travelling steps according to safe dance practices

2.3 Coordinate arm and head lines with foot movements at a foundation level

2.4 Practise turning while creating beats with the use of feet incorporating use of spotting

2.5 Choreograph tap steps and rehearse in a class jam session

2.6 Perform cool-down exercises after dance activity

3. Perform simple tap dance sequences

3.1 Select a prepared tap dance to perform in consultation with required personnel

3.2 Communicate mood and style of dance to audience

3.3 Maintain timing, rhythm and technique when dancing without musical accompaniment

3.4 Use a good control of line when performing

4. Review performances and set goals

4.1 Evaluate own performance and development of foundation tap dance techniques

4.2 Seek coaching from others and identify areas where own dance technique can be improved

4.3 Set goals for improvement and develop a strategy to achieve them

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • perform at least two tap dance sequences to music of differing tempos.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • demonstrate a range of foundational tap dance techniques
  • perform barre and centre exercises
  • respond to constructive coaching on own performance
  • follow safe dance practices
  • use tap dance terminology in discussions.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • foundational tap dance techniques
  • key components required to complete safe warm-up and cool-down activities
  • common clothing and footwear needed when performing foundational tap dance techniques
  • principles of safe dance practice that apply to tap dancing
  • foundational tap dance terminology
  • strategies to evaluate performance and respond to coaching to set goals to improve techniques.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • clothing and footwear required to perform tap dance
  • access to dance performance areas or spaces.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
