Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to research and plan projects that represent a diversity of cultural arts practices of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artists, with an understanding of international context.

The unit applies to individuals who may be working autonomously or with others, as project officers, assistant managers or managers in the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural arts industry. Individuals could be working in urban, regional, rural or remote settings. The work environment could involve interactions with artists and their communities in contexts such as cultural centres, arts centres, cooperatives, commercial galleries, public galleries, museums, retail outlets, community projects, exhibitions, events and festivals.

This unit reflects the diversity of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultures and their cultural arts practices. It emphasises the importance of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples controlling their own cultural heritage and identity.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • produce at least one project plan for a project, program exhibition or workshop that represents diverse national or international indigenous cultural arts, and includes:
  • planning formats and procedures
  • project purpose, participants and audience
  • requirements of cultural protocols
  • project timelines
  • simple budget that includes key expenditure items and potential income streams
  • overview of identified risks and mitigation strategies
  • identification of roles and responsibilities of project participants.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • consult with artists, their families and communities, and other relevant stakeholders about intended project and cultural requirements
  • research and analyse diverse indigenous cultural arts in national and international contexts for its application to the project
  • prepare records required for project and present information to be used by others.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • artists, networks, publications and organisations of national and international indigenous cultural arts practice and industry
  • key principles and protocols for:
  • interacting with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artists or their communities
  • using indigenous cultural material and artwork
  • sustainability considerations including those relating to cultural, economic, environmental and social factors
  • legal and ethical requirements relating to project and impact on project planning
  • copyright, moral rights and intellectual property issues with reference to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artwork
  • logistical considerations for project
  • strategies for actively involving artists, their families and communities in project
  • funding and revenue opportunities for project
  • meaning of in-kind support in context of project.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural art, artists or their communities
  • cultural requirements, processes and techniques suited to language and literacy capacity of learners and work being performed.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
