Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to investigate and present information on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander culture compared to other cultures. It involves investigating impact of cultural differences on the daily life of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.

The unit applies to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individuals who wish to gain greater understanding of the impact of belief systems and culture.

This unit requires support of Elders or Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community members.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • complete at least one presentation of investigation findings of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander culture.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • research information about Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander culture using written texts
  • communicate with Elders or Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community members to access relevant information following required cultural protocols
  • review own presentation to identify at least one area for improvement.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • significant elements of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander culture and other cultures
  • impact of belief systems on daily lives of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities and other cultures
  • impacts of cultural differences on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities
  • presentation techniques used for presenting information on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander culture to different audiences.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • Elders or Indigenous community members
  • resources required for learner to present information format required
  • cultural requirements, processes and techniques suited to language and literacy capacity of learners and work being performed.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
