Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to refine a particular drawing technique to a high level of technical expertise. It involves evaluating different specialised techniques and selecting one to refine and producing professional finished drawings for different contexts.

The unit applies to professional practitioners with a high level of drawing proficiency working in many industries. The particular drawing technique may be electronic, manual, technical or artistic and will vary depending on the needs of the practice.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • produce at least three different specialised drawings using the selected refined drawing technique.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • evaluate and refine a selected drawing technique using practice and experimentation
  • establish and follow safe work practices for selected techniques
  • produce finished drawings for professional work that show technical command and confidence with the selected technique
  • identify professional development requirements and opportunities using reflection and feedback.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • common specialised drawing techniques, including the limitations and constraints of each technique
  • factors that influence selection of drawing technique
  • criteria used to evaluate one’s own skills in using selected drawing techniques
  • potential of different techniques to achieve different effects relevant to own area of practice
  • historical and contemporary influences applicable to refining drawing techniques
  • typical problems and challenges in the application of selected techniques to specialised drawing, and how to avoid or resolve them.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • equipment, materials and tools used to produce drawings
  • interaction with applicable people.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
