Qualification Description
This qualification reflects the role of individuals who design for live theatre performance. They execute judgements across a broad range of technical functions in the entertainment industry and have a wide range of specialised technical, creative or conceptual skills. They have autonomy in performing and can be responsible for planning, coordinating and evaluating the work of others within broad parameters.
National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work
Sets and staging for some performances or events may fall within the definition of construction work. If so, people entering the construction site are required to complete the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for Construction Work (Australian Safety Compensation Council, May 2007).
Achievement of the unit 'CPCCOHS1001A Work safely in the construction industry' from the CPC08 Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package fulfils this requirement.

Entry Requirements
Entry to this qualification is limited to those who:
- Have completed CUSOHS301A Follow occupational health and safety procedures or can demonstrate equivalence; and
- Are able to demonstrate production design skills that support learning at Diploma level.
In particular, they must be able to provide evidence of their ability to:
- engage with the design process by developing solutions through research, reflection and generating and refining ideas;
- produce a body of design work demonstrating the ability to respond effectively and creatively to design challenges and requirements;
- refine concepts in line with current industry standards; and
- apply knowledge of trends and traditions in at least one of the following areas:
- costume
- lighting
- scenery and props
- screen and media
- sound
- staging
- vision systems.
Those skills and knowledge may have been acquired through personal or work experience, or through formal study.
Packaging Rules
Total number of units = 15
7 core units plus
8 elective units , of which:
- a minimum of 1 unit must be from Group A
- a minimum of 1 unit must be from Group B
- of the remaining units:
- up to 6 units may be from Group A, B and/or Group C
- up to 3 units may be from Group D
- up to 3 units may be from an accredited course or any currently endorsed Training Package qualification at Diploma level or above
- up to 1 unit may be from an accredited course or any currently endorsed Training Package qualification at Certificate IV level.
The elective units chosen must be relevant to the work outcome and meet local industry needs.
