This unit was released in CSC Correctional Services Training Package release 1.0 and meets the Standards for Training Packages.

Application

This unit describes the skills required to ensure compliance with security procedures, maintain the safety and security of staff and/or offenders and maintain safety and security documentation.

This unit applies to those working with offenders/detainees/staff in prisons, secure custodial centres and community facilities under custodial supervision, with responsibility for managing security matters.

The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to, particularly those related to managing security.

Those undertaking this unit work independently, drawing upon support from a range of established resources. The role requires complex task organisation, analysis and decision making skills. Working as part of a coordinated team is integral to the role.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.

1. Ensure compliance with security procedures 

1.1 Identify all security and emergency procedures relevant to own work role.

1.2 Oversee implementation of relevant security procedures according to the level of risk.

1.3 Provide instruction to work group on potential security risks.

1.4 Report potential breaches of security and/or faults to appropriate authority.

2. Maintain safety and security of staff and/or offenders 

2.1 Maintain dynamic security actions by ensuring regular and consistent interaction with offenders or staff and sharing of information and observations.

2.2 Ensure security functions and activities relating to the care and wellbeing of offenders are implemented.

2.3 Coordinate response to security breaches involving staff or offenders.

3. Maintain safety and security documentation 

3.1 Participate in the routine review of security procedures and responses according to own level of responsibility.

3.2 Complete security documentation.

3.3 Manage and store security files.

These Assessment Requirements were released in CSC Correctional Services Training Package release 1.0 and meet the Standards for Training Packages.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the candidate must demonstrate evidence of performance of the following on at least two occasions.

  • using a range of communication equipment and information sources accurately
  • maintaining accurate documentation
  • making decisions
  • using effective oral and written communication

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the depth of knowledge demonstrated must be appropriate to the job context of the candidate.

  • organisation's policies and procedures related to security and security documentation
  • code of conduct
  • duty of care
  • emergency codes and alarms
  • staff roles, responsibility and delegations in security matters

Assessment Conditions

Evidence for assessment must be gathered over time in a range of contexts to ensure the person can achieve the unit outcome and apply the competency in different situations or environments.

Valid assessment of this unit requires a workplace environment or one that closely resembles normal work practice and replicates the range of conditions likely to be encountered by an individual responsible for managing security, including coping with difficulties, irregularities and changes to routine.

  • CSCORG008 Gather and report complex information
  • BSBWOR401A Establish effective workplace relationships

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
