This unit supersedes and is equivalent to CSCDH406A Train dogs for response and control.

Application

This unit describes the skills required to develop a training plan for a dog/handler team; train dogs; and report and record the dog's progress.

This unit outlines the performance standards for those working in a dog/handler team training dogs for response and control tasks or training a dog/handler team.

The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to, particularly those related to the training and handling of dogs.

A person undertaking this unit would usually work autonomously using support from mostly familiar resources. The role requires complex task organisation and application of moderate analytical skills.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Develop a plan for training 

1.1 Identify and assess the training needs of the dog/handler team.

1.2 Develop a training plan that addresses the unique needs, strengths and weaknesses of the team.

1.3 Schedule training program to meet priority needs within the organisation.

2. Train dogs 

2.1 Implement training program according to training plan time frames.

2.2 Handle and control the dog in a way that maintains its performance and safety.

2.3 Use organisation's approved dog training methods.

2.4 Use training equipment in accordance with legislation, policy and guidelines.

2.5 Assess the dog’s response to training without delay.

3. Record and report on the progress of dogs 

3.1 Complete training records for dogs as required by the organisation.

3.2 Report dog’s progress to appropriate people.

3.3 Review training plan to reflect the changing needs of the dog/handler team and organisation.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not yet specified the candidate must demonstrate evidence of performance of the following on at least one occasion.

  • collecting, analysing and organising information about dog performance in training to produce records and reports required by the organisation
  • writing and reviewing training plans
  • managing timelines to schedule training effectively
  • using methods of training dogs approved by the organisation
  • working independently and in teams to train and develop the capabilities of dogs for response and control activities
  • assessing dog performance during training

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the depth of knowledge demonstrated must be appropriate to the job context of the candidate.

  • enabling legislation and regulations; and animal health and welfare requirements affecting working dogs in control and response situations
  • organisation’s policies and procedures related to the use of dogs for response and control and appropriate training methods
  • conditioning principles and appropriate methods of rewarding the dog for exhibiting required behaviour
  • humane and positive training methods that reinforce natural behaviour and maintain the working skills and enthusiasm of the dog
  • responses that dogs should give to voice commands and hand signals
  • records and reports required by the organisation
  • appropriate people to whom to report dog progress
  • correct procedure for completing reports and records following dog training

Assessment Conditions

Evidence for assessment must be gathered over time in a range of contexts to ensure the person can achieve the unit outcome and apply the competency in different situations or environments.

Valid assessment of this unit requires a workplace environment or one that closely resembles normal work practice and replicates the range of conditions likely to be encountered while training dogs for response, including coping with difficulties, irregularities and changes to routine. This unit contains knowledge which may be assessed off the job, for example, in a structured learning process.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
