Application
This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to identify, inspect and test the operation of fire and smoke doors installed at client premises. Service activities are conducted in compliance with requirements of the relevant Australian Standards and National Construction Code (NCC).
The unit does not cover the installation or repair of fire and smoke doors, or any other installation, replacement, maintenance or repair functions that are restricted to licensed trades or occupations.
The unit is suitable for those with basic skills and knowledge undertaking routine work tasks under the direction of more experienced workers.
Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency in some states and territories. For further information, check with the relevant regulatory authority.

Plan and prepare for service operation. |
1.1 |
Read work instructions to clarify service timeframes, client needs, and site and fire and smoke door locations. |

Discuss planned service procedures with relevant persons to clarify client needs and expectations. |

Plan work activities to comply with relevant Australian Standards, NCC, regulatory, work health and safety (WHS) and workplace requirements. |

Identify potential and actual breaches of rules and regulations associated with work instructions and take required action to ensure compliance according to regulatory and workplace requirements. |

Select and use required personal protective equipment (PPE). |

Arrange access to worksite and communicate with responsible entity and affected persons to advise duration and impact of planned service procedures and to ensure alternative safety arrangements are implemented. |

Identify fire or smoke door according to purpose, operation and location. |

Inspect fire or smoke door and associated frame, components, hardware items and seals to identify defects, damage or signs of wear according to the relevant maintenance schedule. |

Check fire or smoke door marking and labelling against requirements of the relevant Australian Standard. |

Operate fire or smoke door to test and verify correct working order according to the relevant Australian Standard, manufacturer and workplace requirements. |

Record identified defects and non-compliances according to regulatory and workplace requirements. |

Finalise service operation. |

Complete service documentation and report outstanding defects, non-compliances and recommended rectifications according to Australian Standards, regulatory and workplace requirements. |

Leave client premises in a clean and tidy condition. |
