Application

This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to read, interpret and analyse building design drawings for Class 1 and 10 buildings, as defined in the National Construction Code (NCC). It covers interpreting construction industry conventions for drawings and analysing drawings for different projects to identify design and technical features.

The unit applies to drafters who work under the supervision and instruction of building designers or architects and use specialised knowledge to complete routine and non-routine tasks and deal with predictable and sometimes unpredictable drafting problems.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

To demonstrate competency, a candidate must meet the performance criteria of this unit by analysing complete sets of working drawings to identify design and technical features for the following buildings classified according to the National Construction Code (NCC):

  • a single-storey Class 1 building with one Class 10 building
  • a two-storey Class 1 building.

Knowledge Evidence

To be competent in this unit, a candidate must demonstrate knowledge of:

  • NCC building classifications
  • construction techniques, processes and materials and their application in drawings for Class 1 and 10 buildings
  • construction terminology used in building design drawings
  • conventions and formats used for building design drawings:
  • dimensioning
  • orientation
  • representations of doors, windows, fittings, fixtures and materials
  • conventions and formats used for general technical drawings:
  • abbreviations
  • dimensioning lines
  • gradients
  • levels
  • scales
  • symbols
  • key requirements of drawing standards:
  • AS 1100.101 Technical drawing - General principles
  • AS 1100.301 Technical drawing - Architectural drawing
  • drawings relevant to building design projects:
  • plan views
  • elevation views
  • section views
  • 3-D views
  • detail views
  • specifications
  • key features of site plans:
  • site boundaries and dimensions
  • locations and orientations of buildings
  • locations of services, retaining walls, fences, driveways and walkways
  • setback requirements
  • easements

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must meet the requirements for assessors contained in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations. Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting where these skills and knowledge would be performed. This includes access to:

  • computer with internet and relevant software
  • relevant regulations, codes and standards
