Unit of competency

Modification History

Release 1.

This version first released with CPC Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package Version 2.

New unit of competency.

Application

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to demolish sections of existing shop buildings and dispose of demolished materials and waste. It covers completing the required demolition work to schedule, following specific plans and specifications, and working safely with others as a member of a team.

The unit supports shopfitters who demolish old shop building components in order to make alterations, extensions and additions to the shop. Work may be completed on site concurrently with other shopfitting work and must be scheduled to accommodate both client requirements, where the shop is operational, and the requirements of other shopfitters and associated contractors.

This demolition work is limited to non-load-bearing shop building structures, including:

  • external walls and cladding
  • suspended ceiling structures
  • shopfronts and glazed sections
  • joinery and fixtures
  • high level bulkheads.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency in some States. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm those requirements.

1

Plan shop demolition work.

1.1

Job requirements  for demolition work are obtained, confirmed and applied to planning and preparation.

1.2

Designated demolition area of shopfront and bulkhead  is assessed to identify hazards and risks  and confirm scope of work.

1.3

Risk management and hazard control measures  are confirmed with team members and other site personnel, as required, including determining and managing the status of existing services.

1.4

Health and safety and environmental requirements  for the work site and for individual demolition tasks are clarified and applied to planning and preparation.

1.5

Safe work method statement (SWMS) is reviewed and amended as required in consultation with relevant personnel.

1.6

Plant, tools and equipment  suited to the specified work are selected, checked for serviceability, and faults are rectified or reported before starting work.

1.7

Installation of scaffolding or lifting equipment is arranged according to job requirements.

1.8

Materials forming the building components to be demolished are identified, and removal, handling and disposal are planned according to work health and safety (WHS) and environmental requirements.

1.9

Tasks are sequenced and scheduled in consultation with team members, other site personnel and client as required, to ensure work is completed within given timeframe.

2

Prepare demolition work site.

2.1

Site is established using hoardings, barricades and signage as specified in work instructions, and service isolation is checked.

2.2

Scaffolding, fall protection and props are installed or checked against demolition plan and scope; and plant, tools and equipment are located on site according to work instructions.

2.3

Building components to be demolished and removed are identified, measured or calculated, and marked as required.

2.4

Site is checked against SWMS and safety and environmental requirements before starting work.

3

Apply demolition procedures.

3.1

Individual tasks are assessed immediately before starting work to identify undiscovered hazards  and SWMS are reviewed and amended in consultation with relevant personnel as required.

3.2

Demolition procedures are carried out according to SWMS for dismantling or demolishing and removing materials from location to designated storage area.

3.3

Propping is installed as required to prevent collapse of overhead non-load-bearing elements.

3.4

Plant, tools and equipment are used safely and within limits of specified application according to manufacturer recommendations and workplace and safety requirements.

3.5

Effective verbal and non-verbal communication, including the use of mobile technology, is maintained with team members and other site personnel as required to monitor and manage demolition procedures.

3.6

Demolished materials and sections of building components are safely and effectively handled using appropriate material handling techniques consistent with the type of materials and components.

3.7

Demolished materials and components identified for salvage are safely and effectively handled, stored and stacked ready for transport according to WHS material handling practices and techniques.

4

Clean up.

4.1

Work area is cleared and materials disposed of, reused or recycled according to legislation, regulations, codes of practice and job specifications.

4.2
