Application

This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to work effectively and sustainably work in the construction industry.

The unit includes the identification and clarification of the construction industry work context, scope and employment conditions, responsibility required to be accepted by the individual, working in a team, individual career path improvement activities and sustainable work practices and techniques.

The unit is suitable for those with basic skills and knowledge undertaking routine work tasks under the direction of more experienced workers.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance criteria describe what needs to be done to demonstrate achievement of the element.

Plan and perform work.

1.1

Plan work activities and establish priorities and deadlines with work group colleagues.

1.2

Review safe work methods and practices and select and use personal protective equipment (PPE).

1.3

Follow plan to complete work to the standard expected in the workplace, following guidelines, directions and specifications provided by supervisors.

Note and report variations and difficulties in completing work.

1.5

Detail and request support required to achieve required work outcomes and quality.

Work effectively in a team.

2.1

Consult team members to identify team purpose, roles, responsibilities, goals, plans and objectives.

2.2

Support team members to meet expected outcomes.

2.3

Encourage team members to take responsibility for their own work and to assist each other in undertaking required roles and responsibilities.

2.4

Provide feedback to team members to encourage, value and reward team members’ efforts and contributions.

Work constructively as a member of the team to identify and resolve problems that impede the team’s performance.

Determine own learning needs.

3.1

Consult with supervisor to identify own learning needs to meet future work requirements.

Research, identify and evaluate opportunities to learn and develop required skills and knowledge for future construction industry work.

Comply with environmental and resource efficiency requirements.

Identify and record work site environmental and resource efficiency requirements and resources that apply to own work role.

4.2

Follow enterprise environmental requirements, plans and procedures to improve environmental practices and resource efficiency.

Identify and report work site environmental hazards and resource efficiency issues.

4.4

Identify and report breaches of requirements and opportunities for improvement to work site practices.

Performance Evidence

To demonstrate competency, a candidate must meet the performance criteria by at least once:

  • planning, performing and reporting on a construction task, working as a member of a work group
  • working effectively with members of a team
  • determining and reporting on own learning needs
  • determining and recording resource efficiency requirements for resources on a construction site, reporting on environmental hazards and recommending improvements.

Knowledge Evidence

To be competent in this unit, a candidate must demonstrate knowledge of:

  • scope and nature of the construction industry and its national economic importance workplace
  • construction job roles and employment opportunities in the construction industry
  • skills and knowledge required to work effectively in the construction industry
  • construction employment conditions, organisational requirements, responsibilities and duties related to jobs and career paths
  • safe work methods and practices to meet Australian government and state and territory WHS legislative requirements
  • site goals and the contributions of teams in construction activities
  • techniques for working effectively in a construction team environment
  • techniques for determining own learning needs and researching and evaluating learning opportunities
  • environment and resource efficiency requirements in the construction industry.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must meet the requirements for assessors contained in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations.

This unit must be assessed in the workplace or a close simulation reflecting workplace conditions and standards, materials, equipment, activities, responsibilities, procedures, safety requirements and environmental considerations.
