This version first released with CPC Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package Version 4.0.

Application

This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to erect and dismantle formwork for basic slabs on ground, rebates to slabs on ground and steps to strip footings in residential and commercial sites.

It includes:

  • establishing required levels on site
  • constructing formwork using boxing materials such as timber, metal, masonry, fibre cement sheeting or reconstituted timber products
  • using fixings to contain wet poured concrete until it is completely cured
  • stripping the formwork and preparing and storing it for re-use.

This unit is designed for those working as a member of a team safely erecting and dismantling formwork for footings and slabs on ground.

It applies to workers in the construction industry. It involves working under supervision in a team environment.

No licensing, legislative, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe what needs to be done to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Plan and prepare to erect and dismantle formwork for footings and slabs on ground.

1.1 Review and clarify task to erect and dismantle formwork for footings and slabs on ground.

1.2 Assess work site to determine scope of work.

1.3 Review design of footing and/or slab on ground from job drawings and specifications, and check to make sure it is in accordance with legislation, regulations and codes of practice.

1.4 Review work health and safety (WHS) requirements for the task in accordance with safety plans and policies.

1.5 Identify safety signage and barricade requirements.

1.6 Review environmental requirements for the task in accordance with environmental plans and legislative requirements.

1.7 Select plant, tools and equipment, check for serviceability and rectify or report any faults.

2. Erect formwork for footings and slabs on ground.

2.1 Erect identified safety signage and barricades, and fit personal protective equipment (PPE).

2.2 Set out formwork to requirements of drawings and specifications.

2.3 Select fixings and fasteners.

2.4 Construct and erect formwork shutters and/or edge boxing.

2.5 Brace formwork support.

2.6 Install block-outs and cast-in services to specified locations.

3. Dismantle formwork for footings and slabs on ground.

3.1 Remove edge boxing and bracing/strutting support sequentially and safely.

3.2 De-nail, clean and store or stack timber components safely for re-use or removal from site.

3.3 Clean and oil steel components, then store or stack to manufacturers’ specifications.

3.4 Discard damaged formwork components safely after stripping.

4. Clean up after dismantling formwork for footings and slabs on ground.

4.1 Clear work area and dispose of, re-use or recycle materials in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes of practice and task requirements.

4.2 Clean, check, maintain and store tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and workplace requirements.

Performance Evidence

To demonstrate competency in this unit, a person must:

  • form up on ground a slab of at least nine square metres, incorporating an edge rebate and internal corner to specifications
  • form up a step to one foundation excavation to specified masonry units.

In doing this, the person must meet the performance criteria for this unit.

Knowledge Evidence

To be competent in this unit, a person must demonstrate knowledge of:

  • jurisdictional work health and safety (WHS) and environmental legislation and regulations relating to erecting and dismantling formwork for footings and slabs on ground, including:
  • job safety analyses (JSAs)
  • safe work method statements (SWMSs)
  • safety data sheets (SDSs)
  • safety manuals and instructions for plant, tools and equipment
  • signage and barricades
  • personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • environmental and work site safety plans
  • requirements of Australian Standards and the National Construction Code (NCC) relating to erecting and dismantling formwork for footings and slabs on ground
  • workplace requirements for undertaking all aspects of erecting and dismantling formwork for footings and slabs on ground,including interpreting work orders and reporting problems using general construction terminology applicable to work tasks
  • processes for interpreting project plans and specifications for erecting and dismantling formwork for footings and slabs on ground, including use of signage and barricades and calculation of material quantity and quality requirements
  • environmental requirements for erecting and dismantling formwork for footings and slabs on ground, including those relating to:
  • clean-up
  • noise and dust
  • vibration
  • waste management
  • types, characteristics, uses and limitations of plant, tools and equipment used for erecting and dismantling formwork for footings and slabs on ground
  • use of formwork materials, processes for setting out and measuring, requirements of application and for line, level and plumb in construction projects, formwork techniques and quality requirements, including termite barriers
  • processes for:
  • safe dismantling of formwork, including preparation of materials for re-use
  • materials and equipment storage and maintenance, and environmentally friendly waste management.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must satisfy the requirements for assessors contained in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations.

Assessment of performance must be undertaken in the workplace or in a simulated workplace environment. Tasks are to be performed to the level of proficiency and within the time limits expected in a workplace.

Assessors are responsible for ensuring that the person demonstrating competency has access to:

  • work site and specifications to form-up a slab on ground and form-up a step to a foundation excavation
  • appropriate documents, formwork materials, tools, equipment and PPE currently used in industry
  • requirements of appropriate sections of legislation and regulations
  • relevant workplace policies and procedures.
