Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to reduce carbon emissions by effectively measuring, analysing and reducing resource use.

It applies to individuals who are responsible for developing workplace plans and strategies that comply with legislative and best practice requirements.

1. Establish carbon footprint

1.1 Identify sources of carbon emissions within the organisation

2. Plan carbon emissions reduction

2.1 Access and interpret organisational carbon reduction policies and procedures, contractual obligations and legislative requirements 2.2 Research best practice approaches to identify potential ways to reduce workplace carbon emissions

2.3 Provide carbon emissions information to the work team in a clear, concise and accessible manner

2.4 Seek suggestions and ideas about carbon emissions reduction from the work team

2.5 Calculate costs and savings associated with carbon emission proposals

2.6 Develop a carbon management improvement plan and present to required stakeholders for approval

3. Implement and monitor a carbon management improvement plan

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • measure carbon emissions and determine carbon footprint for a work area
  • present and discuss carbon emissions information
  • research and develop an approved carbon management improvement plan
  • implement and monitor a carbon management improvement plan, in accordance with legislative and organisational requirements
  • report on implementation of a carbon management improvement plan, according to organisational requirements.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

  • explain the term 'carbon footprint'
  • list and describe sources of carbon emissions within the organisation
  • outline the legislative and regulatory context relevant to carbon management
  • outline the organisation’s policies, procedures and practices that relate to the carbon management improvement plan
  • summarise the organisational requirements for the storage of carbon reduction records
  • explain how to assess training needs within the organisation.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in the sustainability field of work and include access to:

  • relevant legislation, regulations, standards and codes
  • relevant workplace documentation and resources
  • case studies or, where possible, real situations
  • interaction with others.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
