Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for committee or board members to communicate with community stakeholders, including other organisations, to engage people in association or club activities.

It applies to individuals who to interact with community stakeholders in their roles as members of committees or boards of governance.

1. Plan the organisation's community stakeholder communication strategy

1.1 Access the organisation's planning documentation to determine policies and protocols for community stakeholder communication

1.2 Assess trends in the community relevant to geographic, social or political contexts to determine how they relate to the organisation

1.3 Discuss proposed organisational communication stakeholder strategy with board and/or committee members

1.4 Assess the success of past community stakeholder communication methods

1.5 Determine the most appropriate communication methods to engage with community stakeholders to promote the organisation

1.6 Evaluate options for action with community stakeholders and identify preferred options

1.7 Convey information on preferred communication options with community stakeholders to the board and/or the committee

1.8 Follow organisational policies and procedures for confidential information

2. Implement the organisation's community stakeholder communication strategy

2.1 Communicate organisational community stakeholder communication strategy to appropriate personnel and/or volunteers

2.2 Assign appropriate communication methods to designated personnel and/or volunteers

2.3 Coordinate activity and establish the timing of community stakeholder communication, in accordance with the organisation's strategy

2.4 Raise and discuss issues of importance with community stakeholders

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • plan community stakeholder communication strategy
  • coordinate activities to implement community stakeholder communication strategy
  • facilitate communication channels with community stakeholders
  • present information in an appropriate format for community stakeholders
  • review organisational community stakeholder communication activities and strategies.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

  • outline organisational community stakeholder engagement strategy
  • list community consultation methods
  • explain the concept of community control of organisations and how it may impact stakeholder communication requirements with the community
  • explain effective stakeholder communication strategies for sharing information with individuals and groups
  • explain how activity may be coordinated to maximise the effectiveness of community stakeholder communication
  • identify geographic, social, economic and political contexts in which particular organisations operate and how these may impact stakeholder communication methods
  • outline information gathering, analysis and presentation methods
  • identify organisational policies and procedures on communicating with community stakeholders and maintaining confidentiality of information
  • list relevant protocols when communicating with community stakeholders.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical committee or board of governance activities and include access to:

  • examples of issues considered by committees or boards of governance, including community feedback.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
