Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to interact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation members and the community. This includes interacting with other organisations and the community to meet community needs and involve people in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation and its activities.

The unit applies to individuals who in their role as a member of a board of governance of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation are responsible for communicating with key stakeholders in the community.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • interact with at least two different members of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation on at least two occasions
  • interact with members in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community on at least two different occasions.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • common consultation methods and their suitability for different contexts
  • cultural context in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander board members operate, including their role in upholding traditional and cultural values
  • communication strategies for sharing information with individuals and groups
  • structure and objectives for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander board member and community formal and informal forums and discussions
  • methods to gain contributions from stakeholders through board member and community forums and discussions
  • cultural context of community
  • methods to address common Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community issues
  • geographic, cultural, social, economic and political contexts in which different Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations operate
  • methods to gather, analyse and present information
  • methods and techniques to deal with violence in the community
  • methods to deal with resistance towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, and different groups in the community
  • organisational policies and procedures for interacting with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders
  • protocols and cultural responsibilities relating to performance evidence.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to examples of:

  • documents relating to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation’s activities and issues.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
