Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to match vehicle or component multi-layer and clear over base paint colours using original equipment manufacturer (OEM) paint codes. This unit involves preparing for the task, selecting and using specialist tools and equipment, identifying paint codes, preparing colour matching test cards, mixing and spraying paint and conducting a visual colour match, and completing workplace processes and documentation.

The unit applies to those working in the automotive refinishing industry.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare for work

1.1 Identify job requirements from workplace instructions

1.2 Identify hazards associated with the work, assess potential risks and implement control measures in line with workplace policies and procedures

1.3 Identify tools, equipment and chemicals required for repair activity and establish serviceability according to workplace procedures

2. Mix multi-layer clear over base colour

2.1 Set up and operate paint mixing system according to manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures

2.2 Mix paint according to manufacturer specifications, approved colour matching method, and workplace procedures

3. Prepare colour test card and perform visual matching

3.1 Prepare and spray colour matching test cards according to workplace procedures

3.2 Carry out visual matching, make comparisons between matched and original paint, and record paint codes according to workplace procedures and OEM paint codes

3.3 Remix paint for further matching prior to application if first mix does not match original paint

4. Complete work processes

4.1 Conduct final inspection according to workplace procedures and confirm vehicle is ready for use

4.2 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to workplace procedures

4.3 Complete documentation according to workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • colour match at least five different vehicle body panels
  • in the course of the above work, colour match at least one of each of the following paint types:
  • metallic paints
  • pearl paints
  • multi-layer paints
  • solid clear over base (COB) paints.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • methods to locate and interpret information required to colour match multi-layer and clear over base two-pack paints on vehicles and components, including:
  • original equipment manufacturer (OEM) paint colour codes and formulas
  • workplace procedures required to colour match multi-layer and clear over base two-pack paints on vehicles and components including:
  • establishing the serviceability of tools and equipment
  • documentation procedures

Assessment Conditions

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessment must include direct observation of tasks.

Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the colour matching of multi-layer and clear over base paints they have undertaken with vehicles and components, e.g. work orders.

Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.

  • TDS and SDS for paint materials
  • PPE required to colour match multi-layer and clear over base two-pack paints
