Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to locate and apply original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or authorised agency recommended repair procedures during vehicle or component repair work. This unit involves preparing for the task, inspecting the vehicle damage, and identifying repair requirements according to OEM or authorised agency’s specifications, developing a repair plan, and completing workplace processes and documentation.
The unit applies to those working in the automotive body repair industry.

1. Review OEM procedures

1.1 Identify job requirements from workplace instructions

2.1 Identify hazards associated with the work, assess potential risks and implement control measures in line with workplace policies and procedures
2.2 Locate vehicle and components and prepare for repair work
2.3 Identify tools, materials, and equipment required for repair activity and establish serviceability in line with OEM or authorised agency requirements
2.4 Carry out repair work according workplace and OEM or authorised agency’s recommended repair procedures and safety and environmental requirements
2.5 Identify non-compliances against OEM or authorised agency specifications, and report to appropriate personnel for rectification according to workplace procedures

3. Complete work processes

3.1 Conduct final inspection according to workplace procedures and confirm vehicle is ready for use

Performance Evidence
The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:
- apply original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or authorised agency repair procedures to at least three different damaged vehicles.
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:
- methods to locate and interpret information required to apply OEM manufacturer repair procedures during vehicle repairs, including:
- OEM or authorised agency’s vehicle specifications and repair procedures, including compliance requirements
- workplace procedures required to apply OEM manufacturer repair procedures during vehicle repairs including:
- procedures for protecting vehicle and components
- procedures for final inspection of OEM repair procedures
- establishing the serviceability of tools and equipment
- documentation procedures
- housekeeping procedures including:
- examination of tools and equipment
- storage of equipment
- identification, tagging and isolation of faulty equipment
- disposal of excess materials
- recycling procedures
- workplace health and safety (WHS) requirements relating to applying OEM repair procedures during vehicle repairs, including procedures for:
- selecting and using personal protective equipment (PPE)
- manually handling vehicle components
- using tools and equipment
- environmental requirements, including procedures for trapping, storing and disposing of waste materials.
Assessment Conditions
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.
Assessment must include direct observation of tasks.
Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the OEM or authorised agency repair procedures they have applied when repairing a vehicle, e.g. work orders.
Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.
The following resources must be made available:
- automotive repair workplace or simulated workplace
- workplace instructions
- OEM or authorised agency repair procedures
- vehicle specifications
- three different damaged vehicles
- PPE requirements
- internet access
- tools, equipment and materials appropriate for applying OEM repair procedures during vehicle repairs.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
