Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to repair chipped or cracked laminated glass windscreens. The unit involves preparing for the task, selecting and using specialist tools and equipment, cleaning and removing moisture from chipped or cracked laminated glass windscreens, injecting resin into chip or crack, finishing repair work to industry standard, and completing workplace processes and documentation.

The unit applies to those who work in the automotive glazing service and repair industry.

1. Prepare to repair laminated glass windscreen

1.1 Identify job requirements from workplace instructions

1.2 Check size of chip or crack against industry repair standards and identify compliance requirements

1.3 Identify required information for repair activity

1.4 Identify hazards associated with the work, assess potential risks and implement control measures in line with workplace policies and procedures

1.5 Identify tools, equipment and chemicals required for repair activity and establish serviceability according to workplace procedures

2. Repair chipped and cracked laminated glass

2.1 Carry out repair process for chipped or cracked glass according to workplace procedures, manufacturer specifications, industry standards and workplace health and safety and environmental requirements

2.2 Finish glass surface according to manufacturer specifications and safety data sheets (SDS)

3. Complete work processes

3.1 Conduct final inspection according to workplace procedures and confirm vehicle is ready for use

3.2 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to workplace procedures

3.3 Complete documentation according to workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • repair at least three different laminated glass windscreens, at least one of which must be chipped and at least one cracked.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • methods to locate and interpret information required to repair laminated glass windscreens, including:
  • AS/NZS 2366.1 Windscreen repairs - Repair procedures
  • AS/NZS 2366.2 Windscreen repairs - Repair systems
  • manufacturer specifications and procedures or equivalent documentation
  • safety data sheets (SDS) relating to repair chemicals and resins
  • workplace procedures required to repair laminated glass windscreens, including:
  • establishing the serviceability of tools and equipment
  • documentation procedures
  • housekeeping procedures, including:
  • examination of tools and equipment
  • storage of equipment
  • identification, tagging and isolation of faulty equipment
  • disposal of excess materials
  • recycling procedures
  • workplace health and safety (WHS) requirements relating to repairing laminated glass windscreens, including procedures for:
  • selecting and using personal protective equipment (PPE)

Assessment Conditions

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessment must include direct observation of task.

Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the laminated glass windscreens that they have repaired, e.g. repair orders.

Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.

The following resources must be made available:

  • automotive glazing workplace, off-site workplace location or simulated workplace
  • workplace instructions
  • SDS for repair chemicals and resins
  • PPE required to repair laminated glass
  • AS/NZS 2366.1 Windscreen repairs - Repair procedures
  • AS/NZS 2366.2 Windscreen repairs - Repair systems
  • glass repair resins and materials
  • three different laminated glass windscreens as specified in the performance evidence requiring repair
  • vehicle protection equipment
  • cleaning products
  • tools, specialist equipment and materials appropriate for repairing laminated glass.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
