This unit describes the performance outcomes required to install, and replace and adjust mechanical units and assemblies.

It applies to those in an automotive manufacturing environment and involves the application of skills and knowledge at a production worker level.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Plan and prepare

1.1 Interpret drawings and work orders to establish work requirements

1.2 Select lifting gear and operate according to workplace procedures

1.3 Select and inspect tools and equipment and report any faults

2. Install and test mechanical units and assemblies

2.1 Select fasteners, fittings and materials for installation

2.2 Install and test mechanical units and assemblies according to job specifications and work health and safety (WHS) procedures

2.3 Use tools and equipment to install and replace assemblies

3. Remove, replace and test mechanical units and assemblies

3.1 Access and interpret assembly information from manufacturer specifications

3.2 Remove and replace mechanical units and assemblies according to manufacturer specifications and WHS procedures

3.3 Test mechanical units and assemblies according to manufacturer specifications

4. Complete work processes

4.1 Clean and check work area and store tools and equipment according to workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

Before competency can be determined, individuals must have competently installed and replaced mechanical units and assemblies on a minimum of two occasions, in the manner described in the Performance Criteria of this unit.

Individuals must demonstrate they can:

  • install and replace mechanical units and assemblies according to workplace procedures and work health and safety (WHS) requirements
  • use hand and power tools and equipment safely when installing and replacing mechanical units and assemblies
  • test mechanical units and assemblies

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes:

  • workplace procedures relating to installing and replacing mechanical units and assemblies, including:
  • recording and reporting requirements
  • WHS requirements for safe use of installation and replacement equipment
  • operating procedures for installation and replacement equipment
  • procedures for operating lifting equipment
  • techniques for installing and replacing mechanical units and assemblies
  • testing procedures of mechanical units and assemblies
  • communication protocols to report equipment faults.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the assessor requirements in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the mechanical units and assemblies that they have installed and replaced, e.g. installation work sheets.

The following resources must be made available:

  • automotive workplace or simulated workplace
  • tools, equipment and machinery required for the installation and assembly of mechanical units and assemblies
  • mechanical units and assemblies
  • workplace procedures and instructions relating to installing and replacing mechanical units and assemblies
  • vehicle or simulated frame
  • installation work sheets and job specifications.
