This unit describes the performance outcomes required to assemble vehicle frames, axles, suspension and associated components.

It applies to those in an automotive manufacturing environment and involves the application of skills and knowledge at a production worker level.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Plan and prepare assembly

1.1 Interpret materials, parts, drawings and work orders to establish work requirements

1.2 Identify, select and operate lifting equipment according to workplace procedures

1.3 Select and inspect tools and equipment, reporting any faults

2. Cut, drill and weld chassis frame

2.1 Cut chassis as specified in work order and working drawings

2.2 Drill holes that comply in size and position with drawing specifications

2.3 Weld chassis rails according to workplace procedures, drawing specifications and, if applicable, standards

3. Fit axles, suspension, brackets, fixtures and service lines

3.1 Select and use fasteners according to drawing specifications

3.2 Assemble and attach axles, suspension, brackets and fixtures to chassis

3.3 Fit and tension bolts and fasteners to specifications

3.4 Route, fasten, tie and clip service lines to specifications

4. Complete work processes

4.1 Clean, inspect and store work area, tools and equipment according to workplace procedures

4.2 Identify, tag and report faulty equipment

4.3 Collect waste material, and recycle or dispose of according to workplace procedures

4.4 Record workflow and production schedule and complete workplace documents

Performance Evidence

Before competency can be determined, individuals must have competently assembled vehicle frames and axles on a minimum of two occasions.

Individuals must demonstrate they can:

  • communicate with co-workers in assembly area
  • select appropriate parts, materials, tools and equipment for assembling vehicle frames and axles
  • assemble frames, axles, suspension and associated components according to workplace procedures and work health and safety (WHS) requirements
  • weld components according to job specifications, workplace procedures and WHS requirements
  • clean store area, tools and equipment and
  • dispose of or recycle waste material appropriately complete vehicle frame and axle assembly workplace documents.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes:

  • WHS requirements relating to assembling vehicle frames and axles
  • types and applications of vehicle frames, axles and suspension systems
  • procedures for assembling vehicle frames and axles, including:
  • component parts and materials, including:
  • fasteners: clips, pins and clamps; nuts and bolts; and screws
  • service lines
  • types, application and operation of common vehicle component assembly equipment, including fastener tensioning procedures
  • manual-handling techniques for vehicle frames and axles
  • communication protocols to report equipment faults.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must satisfy SNR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the vehicle frames and axles that they have assembled, e.g. assembly work sheets.

Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.

The following resources must be made available:

  • automotive manufacturing workplace or simulated workplace
  • tools and equipment required for the assembly of vehicle frames and axles
  • workplace instructions, procedures and job specifications relating to assembling frames and axles
  • materials, axles, suspension systems, service lines and components to produce an assembled frame and axles
  • vehicle or simulated frame
  • assembly work sheets and job specifications.
