Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare for the job

1.1 Identify wheel alignment specification and adjustment procedures to determine alignment process

1.2 Complete wheel alignment pre-checks according to vehicle manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures

2. Align wheels

2.1 Select wheel alignment measuring tools and equipment and connect to the vehicle according to workplace procedures

2.2 Access and interpret information on wheel alignment equipment from manufacturer specifications

2.3 Align wheels using alignment procedures that comply with manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures

2.4 Adjust aligned wheels according to vehicle manufacturer specifications

3. Complete work processes

3.1 Clean and maintain wheel alignment tools, equipment and work area, inspecting for faults according to workplace procedures

3.2 Identify, tag and report faulty equipment

3.3 Record pre- and post-wheel alignment measurements, and complete workplace forms according to workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

Before competency can be determined, individuals must have competently performed wheel alignment operations on a minimum of two occasions.

Individuals must demonstrate they can:

  • use and set up wheel alignment equipment, including:
  • testing equipment
  • wheel alignment equipment
  • comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements to perform wheel alignment
  • interpret alignment specifications
  • perform wheel alignment and adjustments according to job specifications and workplace procedures on:
  • powered vehicles
  • towed vehicles (trailers)
  • record wheel alignment measurements
  • complete wheel alignment workplace documentation.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes:

  • workplace procedures and WHS requirements relating to performing wheel alignment
  • steering angle geometry
  • types, applications and operation of wheel alignment equipment
  • methods of sourcing wheel alignment specifications
  • wheel alignment problem identification and resolution techniques.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must satisfy SNR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the vehicles on which they have worked, e.g. work sheets.

Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.

The following resources must be made available:

  • automotive workplace or simulated workplace
  • wheel alignment tools and equipment
  • wheel alignment instructions and specifications
  • vehicles requiring wheel alignment
  • workplace procedures relating to wheel alignment and adjustment.
