This unit describes the performance outcomes required to locate, interpret and apply Australian Design Rules (ADR), original equipment manufacturer (OEM) requirements, Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) regulations, and Vehicle Standards Bulletin 6 (VSB6) National Code of Practice Heavy Vehicle Modifications.

It applies to those working in the commercial vehicle industry, and involves the application of skills and knowledge at a specialist level.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements may apply to this unit in some jurisdictions. Users are advised to check with the relevant regulatory authority.

1. Review standards

1.1 Identify heavy vehicle modification standards

1.2 Interpret and apply ADR, OEM requirements, HVNL regulations, and VSB6 specifications for heavy vehicles

2. Check that vehicle complies with standards

2.1 Check workplace manufacturing or modification drawings according to workplace procedures and work health and safety requirements

2.2 Check standards against OEM requirements

3. Complete documentation

3.1 Report non-compliance of manufacturing or modification drawing to standards to appropriate personnel for rectification according to workplace procedures

3.2 Complete relevant workplace documentation according to workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

Before competency can be determined, individuals must have competently confirmed the compliance of heavy vehicles with Australian Design Rules (ADR) and Vehicle Standards Bulletin 6 (VSB6) National Code of Practice - Heavy Vehicle Modifications on a minimum of two occasions, in the manner described in the Performance Criteria of this unit.

Individuals must demonstrate they can:

  • identify and apply standards relevant to the situation, including:
  • ADR relevant to heavy vehicle modifications
  • HVNL regulations, in states/territories where applicable
  • OEM guides and manuals
  • VSB6 National Code of Practice - Heavy Vehicle Modifications.
  • comply with workplace procedures and other requirements when checking heavy vehicles for compliance, including:
  • code of practice
  • VSB6
  • OEM specifications
  • workplace quality.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes:

  • workplace procedures for applying heavy vehicle standards, including:
  • WHS procedures
  • procedures for recording and reporting non-compliance of standards
  • OEM requirements
  • VSB6 National Code of Practice
  • ADR relevant to VSB6
  • Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) regulations in states where applicable
  • methods of determining compliance of working drawings against standards.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the assessor requirements in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the vehicles on which they have worked, e.g. repair orders.

The following resources must be made available:

  • automotive manufacturing workplace or simulated workplace
  • two different heavy vehicles
  • heavy vehicle engineering and working drawings
  • VSB6 National Code of Practice
  • ADR relevant to VSB6
  • HVNL regulations in states where applicable
  • OEM manuals and guides
  • tools and equipment for checking heavy vehicles against standards
  • workplace documentation relevant to applying heavy vehicle standards to heavy vehicles and recording results.
