Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions section

1. Obtain information

1.1 Workplace instructions,  production plans, processes and materials are identified to complete tasks

1.2 Sources of information are regularly reviewed for usefulness and reliability

1.3 Information is updated, and relevant factors and problems that could affect decision making in area of responsibility are considered

2. Evaluate information

2.1 Information is assessed for its validity and reliability

2.2 Information is organised into a suitable form to assist decision making

2.3 Opportunities to establish and maintain contacts with those who may provide useful information are considered

2.4 Conclusions drawn from relevant information are based on reasoned argument and appropriate evidence

3. Record and store information

3.1 Effective methods of recording and storing information are researched and identified

3.2 Information is recorded and stored for easy retrieval using accepted formats, systems and workplace procedures

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance.

Skills

Description

Reading skills to:

  • interpret information on customer needs, competitor products, workplace objectives, fashion trends, safety needs and relevant legislative requirements
  • interpret the outcomes of feasibility evaluations and trials.

Writing skills to:

  • document new design requirements, concept restraints, trials, tests and modification outcomes, and the final new product design.

Oral communication skills to:

  • discuss design concept with appropriate personnel
  • discuss and evaluate concept sketches by consulting with engineering, marketing and other appropriate personnel
  • evaluate manufacturing methods by consulting with engineering, marketing and other appropriate personnel.

Numeracy skills to:

  • estimate required materials, components and related costs by consulting with engineering, marketing and other appropriate personnel
  • calculate critical dimensions and interpret data.

Teamwork skills to:

  • work with a wide range of people while reviewing and evaluating design and development processes.

Range of Conditions

This section specifies work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included. Bold italicised wording, if used in the performance criteria, is detailed below.

Workplace instructions  must include:

  • job sheets, plans, specifications, drawings and designs
  • workplace procedures and manufacturer instructions.

Performance Evidence

Before competency can be determined, individuals must have competently evaluated vehicle information on a minimum of three occasions.

Individuals must demonstrate they can:

  • comply with relevant legislation, regulations, standards, codes of practice, safe work practices and workplace procedures relevant to the decision-making process in the design, development and production of motor vehicles
  • communicate effectively with engineering, marketing and other appropriate personnel to inform evaluation of information
  • apply, within scope of own authority, the requirements of the job or work role in relation to:
  • seeking, evaluating, recording and storing relevant information to assist decision making
  • achieving work quality goals
  • completing work area housekeeping requirements, including the documentation of project activity and process outcomes.

Knowledge Evidence

Individuals must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • workplace procedures to seek, evaluate and prepare information
  • workplace instructions
  • production work plans
  • communication techniques to seek and elicit information from co-workers
  • procedures for recording, reporting and maintaining organisational records and information.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must satisfy SNR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the information that they have evaluated, e.g. evaluation reports.

Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.

The following resources must be made available:

  • automotive manufacturing workplace or simulated workplace
  • workplace procedures for seeking, evaluating and preparing information
  • sources of information relevant to the design, development and production of motor vehicles.
