Application
This unit describes the performance outcomes required to safely use load shifting equipment.
It applies to those in a manufacturing environment and involves the application of skills and knowledge to select and use suitable load shifting equipment and perform pre-operational inspections to ensure its safe operation.

Performance Evidence
Before competency can be determined, individuals must have competently operated load shifting equipment on a minimum of two occasions, in the manner described in the Performance Criteria of this unit.
Individuals must demonstrate they can:
- conduct pre- and post-operational checks to load shifting equipment, including inspection of:
- hydraulic and pneumatic leaks
- lifting block
- operation of control system
- vehicle hazard warning light
- wheels and tyres
- wire rope, chains and lifting attachments
- comply with workplace procedures and relevant load shifting regulations, standards and codes of practice
- select and use load shifting equipment appropriate to weight and volume of load
- store and secure load shifting equipment appropriately
- complete load shifting equipment records.
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes:
- WHS requirements when operating load shifting equipment, including overhead and ground level workplace hazards
- types, application and operation of load shifting equipment, including:
- overhead travelling crane
- pallet truck
- trolley jack
- pre and post-use inspection procedures for load shifting equipment
- methods of determining load specifications, including weight, size and type
- methods of determining appropriate load shifting equipment for the circumstance
- load shifting equipment maintenance reports and schedules
- load shifting equipment storage procedures.
Assessment Conditions
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the assessor requirements in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.
Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the operation of load-shifting equipment, e.g. load shifting equipment log books.
The following resources must be made available:
- manufacturing workplace or simulated workplace
- load shifting devices and equipment, including:
- overhead travelling crane
- pallet truck
- trolley jack.
- workplace documentation relating to load shifting, including load shifting equipment inspection documentation
- load shifting equipment operating instructions and procedures relevant to a manufacturing environment.
