Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to interpret and operate in the commercial and regulatory environment of the wild game meat industry.

Wild game means any vertebrate animal of a species that can be legally harvested in the field and is not farmed.

This unit applies to individuals who work in wild game meat processing establishments, field depot operators and field harvesters.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety, food safety and animal welfare regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

2. Interpret the commercial and regulatory environment of wild game meat harvesting

2.2 Identify relevant state/territory wildlife regulator and their licensing requirements

2.3 Identify the importance of the relevant approved arrangement, food safety plan or management plan

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual has applied knowledge of the wild game meat industry on at least one occasion, including:

  • interpreted the commercial and regulatory requirements for wild game meat industry
  • operated effectively as an individual or as part of a team in the wild game meat industry
  • undertook work in a manner that maintained the professional image of the industry in the performance of harvesting duties
  • complied with high hygiene and sanitation standards expected by both customers of the product and workers.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • application and requirements of approved arrangement or management plan that covers food safety and product integrity requirements
  • role of the state/territory and Commonwealth wildlife regulator and their licensing requirements
  • state/territory animal welfare legislation and its implications for wild game harvesting
  • implications of employer, regulator and international reviews of wild game meat industry
  • steps in the wild game meat supply chain
  • markets for the wild game meat products
  • key information included in the relevant Australian Standard for wild game meat
  • key information included in the relevant Australian Standard for pet meat
  • communication methods to interact effectively with work colleagues and community members.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of the skills in this unit of competency must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • skills must be demonstrated in a wild game processing or harvesting environment or an environment that accurately represents workplace conditions
  • specifications:
  • relevant Australian Standards
  • approved arrangement or management plan
  • access to current state/territory and Commonwealth regulatory requirements for wild game harvesting, processing and animal welfare.

Assessment for this unit must include at least three forms of evidence.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
