Application
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to read and interpret permaculture designs, and coordinate and schedule resources for the establishment of a permaculture system in either a rural or urban environment.
The unit applies to individuals who work under broad direction and take responsibility for their own work, including limited responsibility for the work of others. They use discretion and judgement in the selection and use of available resources, and complete routine activities.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare to establish a permaculture system |
1.1 Read and interpret design and plans for permaculture system 1.2 Identify site, planting methods and system features 1.3 Select materials, tools, equipment and machinery |
2. Coordinate establishment of permaculture system |
2.1 Coordinate and schedule tasks with work team according to design sequence and specifications 2.2 Identify hazards, assess risk and implement controls according to workplace health, safety and environmental procedures 2.3 Maintain a clean and safe work environment according to workplace biosecurity procedures |
3. Prepare the area |
3.1 Implement installation/retrofitting of infrastructure according to plans 3.2 Implement earthworks and soil preparation according to plans 3.3 Select and apply soil improvement additives according to design specifications 3.4 Mark out patterns or positions of elements on site according to design |
4. Position elements in permaculture system |
4.1 Inspect elements prior to installation against specifications, and reject defective elements according to workplace procedures 4.2 Prepare plants to maintain health and vigour before planting 4.3 Position elements according to permaculture design 4.4 Provide elements with post-installation care |
5. Monitor establishment of permaculture system |
5.1 Monitor permaculture system and implement maintenance activities during establishment phase 5.2 Identify conditions inhibiting elements from developing, and rectify according to system design and permaculture principles 5.3 Finalise works for permaculture establishment according to design |
6. Complete establishment of permaculture system |
6.1 Remove and process waste from site works according to workplace and environmental procedures 6.2 Clean, maintain and store tools, equipment and machinery 6.3 Record and report establishment work according to workplace procedures |
