Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to interpret permaculture systems possible for a site, contrast the differences between permaculture systems and conventional methods, and communicate the permaculture system to stakeholders.

The unit applies to individuals who work under broad direction and take responsibility for own work, including limited responsibility for the work of others. They use discretion and judgement in the selection and use of available resources, and complete routine activities.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Interpret information from permaculture system designs and specifications

1.1 Obtain documents and design criteria for a permaculture system

1.2 Interpret and extract information relevant for stakeholders' understanding

1.3 Access and investigate information to supplement planning documents

2. Check permaculture system options from site data and observations

2.1 Identify permaculture system options

2.2 Visit site and investigate and observe site conditions using primary and secondary data sources

2.3 Verify primary and secondary data with possible design options

2.4 Verify that permaculture principles embedded in design options are consistent with site conditions

3. Contrast and compile information on permaculture systems for stakeholders' information

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual has, on at least one occasion, communicated permaculture principles to stakeholders and has:

  • accessed and interpreted information on permaculture system design options for a site
  • investigated site and verified conditions are consistent with possible permaculture system
  • identified and compiled differences between permaculture systems and other conventional systems
  • discussed permaculture principles and practices for possible permaculture systems with stakeholders, including the benefits to stakeholders and ecosystem
  • maintained records and reports for stakeholders' interactions according to workplace procedures.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • permaculture principles and practices, including:
  • ethics
  • permaculture systems and their key features
  • social permaculture
  • sustainable communities
  • environmental and land management
  • reading and interpreting plans and specifications for permaculture systems, including:
  • management of soil
  • energy use
  • water access and use
  • nutrient flow
  • crop rotation
  • harvesting
  • similarities and differences between other land use and management practices and permaculture systems
  • using primary data sources, including:
  • original data gathered by the researcher
  • measurements
  • photographs
  • maps or sketches
  • soil tests
  • observations of light, shade, sun angle
  • flora and fauna present at the site
  • slope and contour information
  • observation of site and adjoining landscape features (e.g., sector analysis)
  • weather observations
  • using secondary data sources, including:
  • data provided by government departments and agencies, local environmental and land owner groups and individuals
  • survey documents, maps and plans
  • official weather data
  • photographs, such as Google Earth
  • communication techniques, including culturally appropriate speech and behaviours to stakeholders
  • importance of records and reporting in permaculture system management.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of the skills in this unit of competency must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • skills must be demonstrated on a site with a permaculture system or an environment that accurately represents workplace conditions
  • resources, equipment and materials:
  • tools and equipment for conducting observations
  • specifications:
  • workplace procedures
  • permaculture system plans and specifications
  • relationships:
  • stakeholders.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
