Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to operate a telehandler, including the use of attachments, safe driving and operation.

The unit applies to individuals who operate a telehandler under broad direction, and take responsibility for their own work.

1. Prepare for telehandler operations

1.1 Confirm activity to be undertaken

1.2 Select telehandler appropriate for the activity

1.3 Source and interpret relevant machinery operation and maintenance manuals and manufacturer instructions

1.4 Identify hazards and risks, and implement safe working practices to manage risks

1.5 Select, fit, use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the task

1.6 Conduct telehandler routine pre-operational checks according to operation and maintenance manual

1.7 Inspect for missing parts, damage, faults or malfunctions, and rectify, report and tag defects according to workplace procedures

2. Select, fit and use attachments

2.1 Select telehandler attachment for the task

2.2 Safely fit attachment according to operation and maintenance manual and local conditions for use

2.3 Test attachment to ensure correct fitting and safe operation

2.4 Use attachment according to design limits and workplace procedures

3. Operate and monitor telehandler

3.1 Perform pre-start and start-up procedures according to workplace procedures and manufacturer instructions

3.2 Check telehandler controls, brakes, attachments and implements for manoeuvrability and serviceability, and ensure faults are rectified or reported according to workplace procedures

3.3 Assess site and operating hazards and apply safe operating techniques

3.4 Drive and operate telehandler, modifying operating techniques as required to meet changing work conditions

3.5 Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment

3.6 Maintain communications with other site personnel during telehandler operations using hand, audible or radio communication equipment according to workplace procedures

3.7 Complete work within the operating capacity of the equipment, responding to alarms and indicators according to manufacturer specifications

4. Complete telehandler operations

4.1 Remove, clean and store attachment according to operation and maintenance manual and workplace procedures

4.2 Prepare telehandler for transport where required according to workplace procedures

4.3 Park telehandler and conduct shutdown procedures according to workplace procedures

4.4 Perform routine operational minor servicing and maintenance according to operation and maintenance manual

4.5 Identify, record and report telehandler and attachment malfunctions, faults, irregular performance or damage according to workplace procedures

4.6 Remove and store telehandler keys in secure location

4.7 Maintain telehandler and equipment use records according to workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual has operated a telehandler using attachments on at least two occasions and has:

  • applied workplace health and safety requirements, including fitted and used personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • recognised and reported workplace health and safety hazards and risks associated with operating telehandlers and using attachments
  • implemented safe working practices to minimise risks when using telehandlers and fitting and using attachments
  • carried out telehandler pre-operational checks and maintenance, including tagging defects if required
  • selected and safely attached, removed, tested and operated attachments according to design limits, manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures
  • carried out telehandler pre-start, start-up and shutdown procedures
  • driven and operated a telehandler safely, including modifying operating technique to meet changing work conditions according to telehandler operation and maintenance manuals and manufacturer specifications
  • operated telehandler on an incline and off-road surface
  • maintained communications during telehandler operations using hand, audible or radio communication equipment
  • responded to telehandler alarms and indicators, and recorded and reported telehandler and attachment malfunctions, faults, irregular performance or damage
  • prepared telehandler for transportation
  • parked and secured telehandler in a suitable location after use
  • recorded telehandler and equipment use.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • relevant codes of practice and legislation with regard to telehandler operation and state/territory licensing requirements
  • telehandler types, capacities, uses and specifications
  • telehandler operation and maintenance manuals with regard to telehandler operation, cleaning, operational minor servicing and maintenance
  • features, operational functions and procedures for safe fitting and use of attachments and implements
  • load limits and the principles of weight distribution with regard to load shifting and telehandler movement
  • distinguishing characteristics of individual telehandlers, including rated performance capacities
  • workplace requirements applicable to health and safety in the workplace for operating a telehandler, including appropriate use of PPE, and minimising hazards and risks
  • telehandler components, controls and features and operational functions
  • telehandler steering systems and features
  • effects of various surface and difficult terrain conditions on telehandler operation and use of attachments
  • duty of care to self, others and the environment
  • telehandler communications procedures using hand, audible and radio communication equipment
  • workplace recording and reporting procedures.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of the skills in this unit of competency must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • a workplace setting or an environment that accurately represents workplace conditions
  • individual must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • individual must not be taking any medication (prescribed or otherwise) that may impair judgement
  • individual must not be in a fatigued state when operating machinery
  • resources, equipment and materials:
  • telehandler
  • attachments
  • PPE applicable to operating a telehandler and the task being undertaken
  • communications equipment relevant to telehandler operations
  • specifications:
  • telehandler operation and maintenance manual
  • legislation relevant to telehandler operation and licensing requirements
  • workplace procedures relevant to telehandler operation and the task being undertaken.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
