Qualification Description
This qualification describes the skills and knowledge required to work safely and effectively in a range of skilled roles in the commercial poultry industry, including poultry farm technician, poultry breeding technician, egg grading technician, poultry services provider and hatchery technician.
Individuals in these roles perform poultry and/or egg production tasks under broad direction which involve discretion and judgement in handling, moving, housing, feeding and routine health care. They take responsibility for their own work, carry out assigned tasks, coordinate processes and tasks, work to schedules, operate equipment, solve problems and comply with regulatory requirements. Work environments may include farms and breeding facilities, hatchery facilities and egg grading floors, for a variety of poultry species.
The qualification requires specialisation in one or more of the following:
- Poultry Farm Technician
- Poultry Breeding Technician
- Egg Grading Technician
- Poultry Services Provider
- Hatchery Technician.
Commonwealth and/or state/territory health and safety, animal welfare, environmental protection and biosecurity legislation, regulations and codes of practice apply to the keeping of and working with poultry, including the handling of fertilised eggs. Food safety regulations and codes also apply to poultry products that are sold for human consumption. Requirements vary between jurisdictions.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.
Entry Requirements
There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
Packaging Rules
To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in:
- 16 units of competency:
- 4 core units plus
- 12 elective units.
Elective units must ensure the integrity of the qualification’s Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) alignment and contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome. Electives must be chosen to achieve at least one specialisation listed below.
For the award of the Certificate III in Poultry Production (Poultry Farm Technician) choose:
- at least 4 units from the electives in Group A, including:
- AHCPLY303 Maintain health and welfare of poultry
- AHCPLY311 Clean and disinfect poultry production sheds
- at least 6 units from the electives listed in Groups A to F (not already selected)
- up to 2 units from any currently endorsed Training Package or accredited course.
For the award of the Certificate III in Poultry Production (Poultry Breeding Technician) choose:
- at least 5 units from the electives in Group B, including:
- AHCLSK313 Monitor livestock production growing environments
- AHCPLY210 Catch and load poultry
- AHCPLY211 Collect store and handle eggs from breeder flocks
- AHCPLY303 Maintain health and welfare of poultry
- at least 5 units from the electives listed in Groups A to F (not already selected)
- up to 2 units from any currently endorsed Training Package or accredited course.
For the award of the Certificate III in Poultry Production (Egg Grading Technician) choose:
- the following units from Group C:
- AHCPLY209 Grade and pack eggs for human consumption
- FBPEGG2004 Operate egg grading and packing floor equipment
- FBPFSY2002 Apply food safety procedures
- at least 7 units from the electives listed in Groups A to F (not already selected)
- up to 2 units from any currently endorsed Training Package or accredited course.
For the award of the Certificate III in Poultry Production (Poultry Services Provider) choose:
- at least 5 units from the electives in Group D, including:
- AHCCHM304 Transport and store chemicals
- AHCCHM307 Prepare and apply chemicals to control pest, weeds and diseases
- AHCPLY210 Catch and load poultry
- AHCPLY311 Clean and disinfect poultry production sheds
- up to 5 units from the electives listed in Groups A to F (not already selected)
- up to 2 units from any currently endorsed Training Package or accredited course.
For the award of the Certificate III in Poultry Production (Hatchery Technician) choose:
- at least 5 units from the electives in Group E, including:
- AHCLSK307 Euthanase livestock
- AHCPLY210 Catch and load poultry
- AHCPLY303 Maintain health and welfare of poultry
- AHCPLY310 Incubate eggs
- up to 5 units from the electives listed in Groups A to F (not already selected)
- up to 2 units from any currently endorsed Training Package or accredited course.
Where more than one specialisation is completed, award of the qualification would read (for example), Certificate III in Poultry Production (Poultry Farm Technician and Poultry Breeding Technician).
At least 7 of the 12 electives selected must be coded at indicative AQF level 3 or above or reflect AQF level 3 outcomes or above.
