Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to measure current resource use effectively, and to carry out improvements, including those that will reduce the negative impacts of work practices on the environment.

This unit applies to individuals who work under general supervision and exercise limited autonomy with some accountability for their own work. They undertake defined activities and work in a structured context.

Work routines meet organisational and compliance requirements for ethical handling and welfare of animals, environmental sustainability, work health and safety, and biosecurity appropriate to the work role.

No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements are known to apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit. There must be evidence that the individual has demonstrated that they have contributed on at least two activities regarding environmental sustainability in the workplace and includes:

  • identified and complied with a range of environment/sustainability legislation and procedural requirements relevant to daily responsibilities
  • identified and reported on current resource usage measurements and identified inefficiencies and suggested opportunities for improvements
  • followed organisation information to participate in and support an improved resource efficiency process and reported as required
  • identified and reported environmental hazards/risks in the workplace and suggested opportunities for improvements.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • environmental and resource efficiency procedures and processes applicable to work role
  • methods for the measurement and documentation of usage of resources
  • environmental regulations relevant to the work role in the animal care industry
  • environmental, and resource hazards and risks associated with the animal care sector in which the individual works
  • procedures for reporting environmental and resource hazards and risks, and environment and resource efficiencies and inefficiencies.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of this unit of competency must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • skills must be demonstrated in a workplace setting or an environment that accurately represents workplace conditions.
  • specifications:
  • environmental legislation and regulations

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
