Application
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide daily care of animals, including the cleaning of animal housing, and grooming or cleaning of animals.
This unit applies to entry level workers in the animal care industry who undertake routine work under supervision. They have some accountability for their own work and solve predictable problems. Workplaces may include retail pet stores, boarding/day care facilities, animal shelters, veterinary clinics, zoos and wildlife sanctuaries.
All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures according to Commonwealth and state/territory health and safety and animal welfare regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare to work |
1.1 Identify daily, weekly and periodical workplace activity schedules and confirm work to be undertaken with supervisor 1.2 Confirm personal workplace responsibilities with supervisor 1.3 Collect workplace schedule and recording documents and update as required 1.4 Identify hazards and risks according to workplace health and safety procedures, and report concerns to supervisor 1.5 Select and correctly fit appropriate personal protective equipment |
2. Check animals |
2.1 Confirm animals included in work area responsibilities during shift, and verify the animal status via records or verbal reports 2.2 Identify basic animal behaviour, body language and condition, at beginning and throughout the shift 2.3 Check animals in work area and update status with supervisor during shift according to instructions |
3. Clean animal housing |
3.1 Clean animal housing areas and general animal care work surfaces, floors and benches according to workplace procedures 3.2 Dispose of waste and soiled bedding according to environmental and workplace procedures 3.3 Identify damage to housing and equipment and report to supervisor |
4. Complete hygiene practices for animals |
4.1 Perform basic animal hygiene inspection and identify cleaning needs of nominated animals 4.2 Identify and practice hygiene control methods for nominated animals 4.3 Brush or clean animals according to species requirements and individual needs |
5. Complete post-hygiene care of animals |
5.1 Return animals to housing after cleaning 5.2 Clean, check and store tools and equipment according to workplace procedures and manufacturer instructions 5.3 Inform supervisor of tools and equipment that require repair 5.4 Check supplies and replenish according to workplace procedures 5.5 Update workplace documents according to workplace procedures |
