Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to identify and assess equine behaviour and catch and control equines for farriery work.

The unit applies to individuals who have a moderate level of experience in handling equines and who use specialised knowledge and technical skills to perform farriery services across different equine industry sectors.

No occupational licensing or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Work health and safety and animal welfare legislation relevant to interacting with horses applies to workers in this industry. Requirements vary between industry sectors and state/territory jurisdictions. Users are advised to check with the relevant authority for specific requirements.

NOTE: The terms 'occupational health and safety' (OHS) and 'work health and safety' (WHS) generally have the same meaning in the workplace. In jurisdictions where the national model WHS legislation has not been implemented, RTOs must contextualise the unit of competency by referring to current OHS legislative requirements.

1. Assess equine behaviours and level of education before handling

1.1 Assess hazards and potential risks to self, others and the equine, and take steps to minimise

1.2 Identify and respond to equine behaviour using senses, instinct and equine communication methods

1.3 Determine the level of education of the equine

1.4 Observe equine to identify factors that cause the equine’s behaviour to change

1.5 Proceed with farriery services after considering equine behaviour and level of education

2. Identify, catch and control an equine

2.1 Identify and isolate the equine using safe handling techniques

2.2 Use gear for catching, handling and controlling equines

2.3 Create and maintain a calm and reassuring climate for the equine

2.4 Catch, handle, control and restrain the equine safely

3. Control an equine

3.1 Select appropriate restraining devices

3.2 Identify, minimise and respond to nervous behaviours

3.3 Take evasive or humane corrective action and warn others of risk when any adverse reaction from an equine is anticipated

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual safely handled at least three compliant and manageable equines, including:

  • identifying and assessing equine behaviour and level of education of an equine
  • identifying, catching and controlling equines in a safe and humane manner
  • handling equines safely and humanely while performing farriery services
  • using and correctly fitting personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • following safe work practices for interacting with equines.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • principles and practices for handling equines
  • common equine behaviour and social traits, including behaviours that indicate an equine is nervous
  • factors that might influence a range of equine behaviours
  • purpose of using different items of handling gear
  • types and purpose of PPE
  • safe equine handling and communication techniques and safe zones
  • safe work practices related to farriery services
  • animal welfare principles and practices relevant to farriery services.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of skills must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • a workplace or simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting
  • resources, equipment and materials:
  • various compliant and manageable equines assessed as suitable for the experience and skill of the individual
  • gear and equipment for activity, including appropriate equine tack
  • PPE, correctly and applicable for activity, for the individual.

Training and assessment strategies must show evidence of the use of guidance provided in the Companion Volume: User Guide: Safety in Equine Training.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
